What keeps you going? How do you stay motivated?? ..dont you sometimes phase off for hours not wanting to work, and the days passes by :meanie: and the more you slack off, the more it gets to you: mcats, ec's, all the stuff u want to do :S ...

Appreciate any advise, thanks everyone!

Take a break every once in a while.

If you can't do it without taking some time to live, you can't do it.

For me volunteering in a hospital and seeing where I could be working/studying in 4+ years helps me stay motivated.

For me, it's all about the future. I'm just starting my 3rd year of medical school, and have had to miss out on a bunch of family vacations and other stuff because of school. It sucks, but I do love medicine, even though I get very tired of studying.

So, heading towards a job that I love keeps me going. And I'm not going to lie, having a steady job that will help me provide for my family is a pretty big motivator for me.

Go to the beach and have some fun.
Seriously, it's not worth it if it prevents you from doing the things you actually enjoy in life. I haven't taken summer classes yet in college, and I don't plan to - I use my summers to work (I need the money) and have fun. Try it out!

i think what motivates me is that medicine is like the challenge that never ends. you can never best it since there are so many mysteries, like genes that say you will live to be 100+

being privileged with the opportunity to spend your life pursuing the answers to these mysteries should be motivation enough to continue

What keeps me going? The possibility of becoming a surgeon, having command of a pediatric OR, and being able to play songs like Flatline by UNK or colt 45 by afro man. If the kids subconsciously pick up the lyrics while under anesthesia - great. If they don't - the nursing staff is still horrified 😎

Definitely take a break once in awhile. Your studying will be more efficient later if you do.

When I'd get bummed about having too much studying to do to be able to play outside in the sun (and I thrive on sunshine ) I'd grab my books and go study by the water and soak up some rays. There was a little stream with a waterfall that I'd go by that was otherwise pretty quiet. I usually got more out of my study time there than a quiet room or library.

(The other thing I do to keep myself going is remind myself what it was like working at fast food place that shall remain nameless...)

What keeps me motivates:

- Dream of becoming a successful person who makes a lot of money by saving lives and that one day I could buy Rolls-Royce

- I also want to get back to those people who think I cannot succeed in life and laugh at me when I tell them I am a pre-med and will be a doctor. 🙄

Success is the best revenge. Not only do I want to silence all the naysayers, but prove to myself that I can do what once was deemed the impossible/improbable. As others have said, volunteer at a hospital, go out and have fun. You're guaranteed to lose confidence in your ability to become a doctor if you stay cooped up staring at thermochemistry problems for a greater part of your day. Balance work/fun...fun some sort of intermediary which will allow you to do both without you giving up. G'luck. 🙂

wut keeps me going? because the job market(non-md) for biochem sucks, thats wut.

Premed is hard, Med school is harder, residency is even more hard

This is the easiest part of your next 7-12 years!

we all go to berkeley 🙄

lol, I didn't mean to be like that. 😳

I just meant that at a med school admissions panel here, we had a UCSF neurosurgeon who did undergrad at UCB and said that med school is a cake walk if you did undergrad here.

I'm personally expecting med school to be 100x harder, but your statement sounded like a broad generalization...

that sounds pretty awesome (the neurosurg). I go to Cal too and the way I've heard our alumni describe the difficulty of med school doesn't seem to be too much different from the way non-cal students describe it (if that makes any sense 😛).

No, it makes sense.🙂 Maybe his personal experience was different, or maybe he super-over-dramatized the memory of Bio1A

I keep going because I'm surprisingly competitive and I suck at science. In other words, even if it's not easy for me to grasp the concepts behind the relation between entropy and enthropy, I am damn well going to study it because I want to get a better grade than the random person who sits diagonally to the right in front of me.

...what? It works for me!

Research shows this is the most effective way 👍

But really you just have to take a break. You shouldn't do summer school unless you absolutely have to. Leave the summer open for less stressful things like work, volunteering, shadowing, blah blah blah. These things are all important for you app but if you choose smartly you can enjoy all of these things and not get burnt out during the summer.

I've seen it said before on here and I think it explains things perfectly: the road to being a dr is not a sprint, it's a marathon, and the only way you'll finish is if you pace yourself. That's exactly what you have to do, pace yourself and not get burnt out.

It's probably not that easy for you because there is no such thing as "enthropy."

stop reading SDN and ur stress level will go down 10 times as much lol

Just kidding folks... but there is some truth to what I said

I think thats the best motivation factor for me right now, people piss me off sometime so I want to prove to myself, my parents, and all those around me who think and want me not to succeed, that WE can do it!!!!!!!!!
