Hi All, I am currently a 21 yr Junior going to college in Alaska. Here are my stats. Also, does anyone know schools that take people from out of state...being from Alaska makes my choices very limited if I can't get into the WWAMI program

GPA: 4.0 overall/science (Bio)
Residency: Alaska

-2 years biomed research, with several biomedical research grants, will continue this til I graduate
(Working on publication in the next year)

-Competed in 3 Bodybuilding shows with 2 first place wins

-150 volunteer hours and counting at Hospital

-Volunteering at various soup kitchens etc

-100 shadow hours of different specialties and counting

-2+ years of tutoring gen chem, Ochem, and Bio to athletes and students

-Various peer mentoring programs/activities

-Letters of rec from respected staff/Dr's etc

-Several academic scholarships

Still have a little less than a year til I take MCAT...I'm thinking if I can get around a 33-34 I should be able to get in at least somewhere?

I think a 30 would make you plenty competitive. A 33-34 would make you a fantastic candidate. You could use a little extra clinical experience, so keep up that volunteering.

Yeah- I lack in clinical in my opinion. I am hoping that they will see Bodybuilding as a positive thing and am thinking it could be a unique attribute. Who knows.

Any other ideas for clinical exposure that could help me stand out? I am planning to see different kind of surgeries and volunteer in different areas...but am not sure what else to do. Thanks!!

Thats really good to know I have a decent chance if I nail it. I'm paranoid because here in Alaska, it seems they typically take older students for the WWAMI program (This is a program ran by UW Med school for students in states without med schools). I really don't want them to question me just because I will be only 22.

I took a practice test without studying and got 35, but I am confident that once I study really hard for 6 months I can get around 34-35 on the real one.

Thanks for the feedback guys! What schools should I be looking at as a resident of Alaska? I know a lot of them won't take out of staters..

Also heres a stupid question- but I am at risk at getting a B this semester in Biochem. It would drop my GPA to 3.97 I believe if I got a B...does anyone think that this would look much weaker compared to applying with a 4.0?

I personally don't think it would hurt me that much if I got 1 B in a 400 level class, but its more of a personal pride thing to me to keep the 4.0 😀 haha

There are many, many med schools that consider OOSers. Look at this post to access a summary sheet (pick the second more recent link) that includes which schools don't admit many (or any) out-of-staters (on the left): http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=527971

You can also see how selective each school is by checking mean acceptee MCAT and GPA.

A GPA of 4.0 or 3.97 are both fantastic. One B will not ruin your chances or be viewed differently. I know what you mean though; I got one B and I felt like my honor was compromised. If you do in fact get a B, the self-disgust will fade in a year or two. (Well, actually, now that you've reminded me, it's coming back somewhat.)
