Hi guys,

About to send in my apps this year and was hoping I could use your input to gauge what kind of schools I should be applying to.

UCLA 2007 Psychobio B.S. and Anthro minor
Cal State LA 07-08 Bio Postbac

GPA is 3.4 for sci and non-science (got a couple of C's as an undergrad)
MCAT is 30S
Research: Couple of years of neurosurgery research with a letter from the head of the dept, one co-authored publication, an e-poster presentation at a big conference
Clinical Volunteering: Hundreds of hours of it 😀
Leadership: Coordinator with a pretty good clinical volunteering internship program for over 2 years; Captain of Ultimate Frisbee Club team at my undergrad
Clinical Experience: 1 year as an EMT on an ambulance, 8 months as a trauma tech in the emergency room.

Obviously my grades suck, but I wanted to see how I'd fare on my extracurrics. Assuming that my personal statement is pretty good/interesting and I send in everything early, what are my chances? Any MD schools I should consider in particular?

Thanks in advance for all your input!

Being from California is definitely not in your favor. I'd guess you might have about a 25% chance of an allo acceptance without further mitigating factors. You might consider trying for a much higher MCAT score (33+) or adding DO schools to your list to improve your chances. Check out the School Selection spreadsheet stickied at the top of this forum to get an idea of the lower-selectivity MD schools.

Your ECs look great but the numbers are both subpar. You are definitely not a shoo-in. Retaking the MCAT would be the fastest way to make med schools notice you.
