I want to know what you guys think makes a good EM applicant.. besides grades and board scores. Does volunteering hold more weight than leadership positions? Should one try to find a research project to complete? What do you guys think helps the most in the end? Thanks. TZ.

You could look at last year's survey, or wait a few weeks for the results of this year's survey, or look at the NRMP's results, or use SDN's advanced search function (look on upper right).

I've found that some of the strongest EM residents/applicants are people with a background in the Emergency services. (EMS, ED tech, nurse, ...)

Research is great if that's your thing. The vast majority of us are still gonna head out in the community to "move the meat".

Leadership in any and all forms helps. It's good to know someone knows how to lead and has the maturity to ensure things get done.

But that's just my $0.02.

there is a good article on what are a strong EM student should be doing on EMRA website under medical student sections
