Spanish, Latin, Greek (Classic), and Polish; I would like to practice in Chicago, so the Polish and Spanish would definitely be useful

uhh, I can speak Klingon.

kh'dahdo Qua'troh ah-mee

I can speak German pretty well . . . unfortunately it's about as useful as Klingon . . .

I speak fantastic English.

yeah, damn, I go to school in Chicago, and I swear I hear so much Polish wherever I go!

Only English and American Sign Language... I tried to learn Spanish but that didn't work out too well. Anyone else know ASL?

I am quite fluent in English. I can also do a passably klingon if any should appear at the hospital.

fiddler

English, Finnish, Swedish, German. Pretty much everything I'll ever need (not that I woudn't like to learn more).

I speak German too. The thing with German is that not too many people in the US speak it, but if you want to travel with your medical career it will be super useful. You can get by in most of Europe and especially Eastern Europe using German. And German has to be more useful in conversation than the Latin I studied first!

In Pennsylvania and Ohio there is a HUGE amish population which speaks a dialect of German. Also in PA is a very large dutch population. Lots of German in PA and Ohio. Not much Spanish at all. Plenty of Polish. Never heard anyone speak Spanish until I moved to Colorado - I grew up in New England area and there was very little Spanish there. I speak a little German (very little at this point - I've rather lost most of it since I've moved to Colorado) and a little French. Nothing near fluent anymore, but at one point I was pretty darn good.

English, Arabic, and some Spanish. I dont use my spanish a whole lot, but i can pretty much get around when i need to use it.

English and Gujurati ... that's a dialect of hindi

English and a bit of gujarati(my native language).

I have a friend that can speak 2 or 3 Indian languages as well as English. But I think Spanish and East Asian languages and languages of the islands(i.e. creole/french) are probably the most useful, because those are where the populations in needing of translators, etc have been observed most. At least, that is what I've seen in my area, but I could be wrong.

Spanish, I used to know in highschool. However, I stopped using it a lot. So I don't remember most of it.

English, Icelandic, German, Danish, Latin. I could get by with Swedish and Norwegian. I had a very bad Spanish teacher so I didn't really like learning it but I can speak a little and I know a little Russian.

English, Thai, some Mandarin. I'm trying to learn Spanish.

Well I must admit German just happened to save my life once . . . I was lost in Venice, it was pouring down rain, everyone else was smart enough to be inside . . . but my friend and I had no idea where our hotel was. Eventually we bumped into some equally clueless Austrailians looking for the same place . . . finally the 4 of us found an older couple beneath an awning (this is after about an hour in a downpour), when asking where the train station was (it was near our hotel) the woman said in pretty good English that she didn't speak English . . . but low and behold they spoke German. A few minutes later we were warm but still dripping wet in our hotel.

Besides, English, I also speak Russian and French, and I'm currently learning Hebrew. Russian could be semi useful if I practice in NY, especially in the neighborhood I live in now where nobody speaks English, only Russian. French I'm not so sure about how useful it would ever be.

I can kinda understand Polish because it's so similar to Russian, but I can't speak it.

Classical Greek (Attic), I'm conversational in Spanish (useful down here) and ASL, a picked up a bit of ESL in Britian though though it never got any better than some kind of bizarre hybrid of the two.

Oh and my English is passable.

EDIT: I just realized Classical Greek isn't really a language you speak, but I can read it. Neither is Latin for the person who posted that. Plus, I know like 10 words in Irish if you want to count that.

I used to. Took 3 semesters in college, no less. With no opportunity to practice over the last 2 years, I've lost most of it though. If you're anywhere near Philly, maybe we could practice together? 🙂

Aside from ASL, I speak English, a good amount of mandarin and spanish, and a little of french, japanese, and the barest smatterings of malay (aka bahasa melayu). I spent a lot of time in college learning different languages, none of them well. I think it's worth something though. When you meet someone from a different culture who's feeling lost and bewildered in a sea of english speaking people, every little bit helps. similarly, when you're travelling, every little bit you know helps. and having learnt a language once, learning it the second time is soooooooo much easier. at least that's my experience 🙂

My goal is to become more proficient in mandarin and spanish, get my french up to speed, and learn hebrew and arabic.

oh and I also read Braille. Can you tell I like languages? 🙂

regarding medicine, I think if you're in a cosmopolitan city, it definitely helps to have a little of each language... not just for communication either. I think learning each language can (if you pay attention) give you a little insight (and the ability to gain more insight) into the different cultures/approaches/ways of life/perspectives etc, which all help with regard to relating to people. then again, what do i know, i'm not even in med sch yet. I CAN say however that I was driven to improve my spanish because I used to volunteer in a heavily hispanic area and not being fluent, while not a problem per se, certainly limited the rapport i could build...

sorry for the ramble 🙂

I'm fluent in German and English 😀 , semi-fluent in French, and used to be fluent in Japanese but forgot most of it 😱 because I didn't speak it for 6 years, but still know enough to get my point across

Fluent in English and Portuguese... which will be useful because I want to do international rotation/volunteer work in Brazil. And I was quite proficient in Spanish in college (lived abroad and studied at a Spanish-speaking university for one year)... but I think I'm losing it because I haven't spoken Spanish for >5 years now. Hopefully I can take some medical Spanish classes during med school and get it back. It shouldn't be too hard.

I'm with you on the ASL, although I don't get a chance to practice so I don't think I'm fluent any longer. Spanish is my first language so I fluent in it. I'd love to learn another language. Poruguese perhaps?

fluent in english and arabic, used to be able to fluently speak french but i've lost it a little bit, although i understand perfectly and can read it all...it's just the speaking part i need to work on. and ive picked up spanish living in cali, but i'm taking spanish courses next semester...gotta make it 4 languages!

Spanish, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, and I can read and write Arabic (can't understand most of it though)

English spanish mandarin and taiwanese (dialect of chinese)

Just curious, what languages do you all know and do you think it will come into use in your future of medicine?

Je parle francais couramment 🙄
Mais je suis née en France, c'est pour ca! 😛

Hebrew... although I can understand a lot more than I can speak....

Spanish. I'm taking a medical spanish course right now and it is really fun. In the Southeast there is a huge influx of spanish-speakers and very few people in medicine who know the language, so it's a great place to be bilingual right now. 🙂

i'm quite surprised that no one has said italian yet.

italian.

can understand spanish and french (a bit harder though), but not speak.

so....no one hear speaks italian?

I'm taking the second half of elementary Italian right now. I've forgotten all the Spanish I took because of it (darn you, similar Romance languages!). I can still string together words in Spanish, but I always end up inserting some Italian. I can understand Cantonese, but people make fun of me when I speak it.

YES someone, finally!!!! Don't worry about messing up some of the Spanish....you're messing it up with a good choice 🙂

I know the bad words of many different languages

Italian rocks. I wish I knew more than a few words. Problem is, those Italians aren't having any babies, so the world population of Italian speakers (small as it is) is getting even smaller.

I spoke Russian and Spanish. Pretty rusty now, though I can still understand it if you speak slowly. Ever here any Bosnian? It kind of sounds like a mix between russian and italian to me.
