Post-grad, non-traditional applicant. Good GPA, MCAT, Research, Medical Work, and Med Volunteering

I feel as though I am a very well rounded individual. I come from a blue collar background. My mom is a nurse and my dad was a cop. My undergrad grades weren't spectacular mainly because, at the time, I was not interested in being a MD and I was working my way through college and partying and having fun. I have allot of good friends. I'm an avid snowboarder in the winter and golfer in the summer. I sail, fish, canoe, swim, wakeboard, snowmobile, and atv. I also love really enjoy food and wine. I love to travel, have been to 28 countries. I worked as a consultant for two years out of college in the business world. I enjoy economics, politics, and am a die hard sports fan.

Whew, OK, I needed to get that out because now I have everything to get into med school but I need to PROVE I'm a well-rounded individual. My advisor asked if I have any non med EC's. I said a ton, but she mentioned things like having a pilot's license or running a marathon. So I guess you are only a well-rounded individual if you have a non-med ACCOMPLISHMENT? Is it just the Type A world most doctors live in that only your accomplishments in life count? How does someone with allot of money who can afford 35 hours of pilot's training a well rounded person? Most of the people I know applying to med school are frankly, although I like them, pretty bland individuals. Most people who meet me are shocked I'm going the MD route, because the last thing I come across as is a nerd. I could see asking if someone is well rounded, but why must it be documented, because frankly thats pretty lame.

So do I need to get a ribbon to prove I actually enjoy other things than medicine? I do have extremely good interview skills because I'm pretty chill and confident and like to joke around. (Not trying to brag, but it is relevant to the discussion.) Will this let them know I am a well-rounded person? I feel this is so unbelievably ironic as people are doing a non-med EC simply to show well roundedness, when the fact they are playing the system to focus solely on their application makes them even less rounded.

Don't worry to much about accomplishments....the amcas will give you the option to discuss what your hobbies are and what you like to do in your spare time; also, during the interview you can bring up that you like to do in your spare time. You're well-rounded and they'll see that. They're wanting to avoid the social misfits who are awkward and uncomfortable around human beings, who spend all their time with their books or computers.

When I walked into the office of my very first interview he had a Superman action figure up on a shelf. I commented, "I really like your superman...although I'm a batman guy myself." He asked why and that conversation lasted the entire 30 minutes of the interview.....

Hey there, I completely understand what you mean. Just wanted to mention that I have a pilot's license and well I moved to the states only two years ago and got the license here but I've always wanted to be a pilot because my dad is a pilot and I grew up flying on the weekends with him. When I decided to move to the states I had no clue that having a non-medical accomplishment like that would have anything to do with applying to med schools. So I guess my point is, that ok it would certainly look good if you had an accomplishment like that, but doing all the things you do and enjoying practicing so many sports and being active all the time certainly makes you a "well rounded" individual I believe. I wish I practiced sports like that, i used to play tennis and swim when I was younger but I was never serious about it. Lately I've been just focussed on playing the guitar, flying, school school school and going skydiving a couple of times.
Anyway, if you enjoy doing so many stuff that should definitely prove that you are well rounded and open minded which i think is the most important thing. I think it is awesome that you like to do so many different stuff and I identify myself with you. They just want to see you are not only focussed on medicine, although it is your priority and you can certainly demonstrate that. 🙂
