Post-grad, non-traditional applicant. Good GPA, MCAT, Research, Medical Work, and Med Volunteering
I feel as though I am a very well rounded individual. I come from a blue collar background. My mom is a nurse and my dad was a cop. My undergrad grades weren't spectacular mainly because, at the time, I was not interested in being a MD and I was working my way through college and partying and having fun. I have allot of good friends. I'm an avid snowboarder in the winter and golfer in the summer. I sail, fish, canoe, swim, wakeboard, snowmobile, and atv. I also love really enjoy food and wine. I love to travel, have been to 28 countries. I worked as a consultant for two years out of college in the business world. I enjoy economics, politics, and am a die hard sports fan.
Whew, OK, I needed to get that out because now I have everything to get into med school but I need to PROVE I'm a well-rounded individual. My advisor asked if I have any non med EC's. I said a ton, but she mentioned things like having a pilot's license or running a marathon. So I guess you are only a well-rounded individual if you have a non-med ACCOMPLISHMENT? Is it just the Type A world most doctors live in that only your accomplishments in life count? How does someone with allot of money who can afford 35 hours of pilot's training a well rounded person? Most of the people I know applying to med school are frankly, although I like them, pretty bland individuals. Most people who meet me are shocked I'm going the MD route, because the last thing I come across as is a nerd. I could see asking if someone is well rounded, but why must it be documented, because frankly thats pretty lame.
So do I need to get a ribbon to prove I actually enjoy other things than medicine? I do have extremely good interview skills because I'm pretty chill and confident and like to joke around. (Not trying to brag, but it is relevant to the discussion.) Will this let them know I am a well-rounded person? I feel this is so unbelievably ironic as people are doing a non-med EC simply to show well roundedness, when the fact they are playing the system to focus solely on their application makes them even less rounded.
