What makes being a physician enjoyable in your opinion?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interesting/complex cases. I'd also say interacting with most patients. Most because no one really enjoys, as you stated, talking to angry patients.

The science and critical thinking behind it. Without taking into account the humanistic side, learning about physiology and then applying this knowledge to real world cases is fun to me. I also like the challenges that arise in treating people. Guidelines exist for all sorts of diseases, but what happens when you have a patient that doesn't really meet those guidelines or has unique contraindications. I like having to find new ways to solve the problem.

This. Prior to becoming a premedical student, I was a computer science student. I would spend endless hours working on puzzles that stimulated my mind. In CS, I would attempt to find innovative and different ways of approaching each problem I saw. Having a family heavily engrained in medicine, I never quite considered how beautiful of a puzzle the human body is. About half a year later, here I stand, elated to solve the various puzzles I'm presented with.

I like having my career trajectory more or less set for the next 20+ years. I'm all about minimizing uncertainties in life.

And coming from a family of blue collar workers, I like the prestige and venerability of being a physician.

It really is kind of interesting how similar medicine and computer science are, despite them being two completely different fields. I'll be graduating with a comp sci degree this summer 🙂

Patient interaction! Being able to sit down and get to know someone- and playing such a pivotal role in their health.

Besides the fact that you can treat people and the pay?

Conducting clinically relevant research to enhance the care of children is kind of fun. Especially when you get to use the things you've learned from this research in patient care settings and also to advocate for the improved health care of children.
