What makes me diverse?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can a moderator ban OPs IP? This thread did literally nothing to contribute to this forum, there wasn't even a healthy discussion, just distraction. This is studentdoctor.net not reddit, save your unpopular opinions and politics for people who care.

cmon and lighten up, these thread diversions reminiscent of reddit are part of the charm of SDN
this trump troll was making me laugh

it's good to have a mod come in and get things back on track, but if we banned everyone after making one off topic post about their unpopular opinion there would be no one left on SDN

im prolife, very conservative and probably voting for donald trump too so I feel ya. Liberals gross me out.

that being said, you can talk about extra-curriculars or cool volunteer things. im doing americorps and did fencing making me diverse. lol. really hate this PC garbage.

im applying to LUCOM! HEHE.

Are there any other med schools that favor being pro-life? im also applying to Gtown <3

You have seat waiting for you at LUCOM. This is exactly what they want in their students.

[Q

UOTE="NimbleNavigator, post: 17762746, member: 756236"]Many medical school application essay prompts focus on diversity. The question posed to me is one I have been mulling over for the past few days. What kind of diversity would I bring to a medical school?

I like Trump whereas it seems like most medical students don't. But I guess that's not the diversity medical schools want.

I am pro-life whereas it seems like most medical students aren't. But I guess that's not the diversity medical schools want.

I believe that we were created by God, whereas it seems like most medical students believe we just appeared from nothing. But I guess that's not the diversity medical schools want.

I am Asian, a minority race. But I guess that's not the diversity medical schools want.

I believe that transgender individuals aren't helped by gender reassignment surgery, and that the reality is there are deeper mental illnesses that need to be addressed instead. But I guess that's not the diversity medical schools want.

Maybe if my views aligned more closely with the liberal faculty of most medical schools then I would be more diverse. I guess that's the diversity medical schools want.

There wasn't healthy discussion because of people like you who just like shouting down people you don't agree with.

I think that's a little harsh lol

While I disagree with the OP, it's to deny him/her a right to voice an unpopular opinion.

You can always use the Ignore button.

would apply but thats too far....
I think this is related to the OP so I'll go ahead and ask. I'm curious why a self-professed "red-pilled chick" wants to get into medicine. Don't you think this community primarily consists of ****ed beta leftists or something?

You are free to write about whatever you want in terms of diversity but what you present will simply have to stand up to scrutiny and has to be relevant to what medical schools are looking for.

Thinking that transgender individuals are mentally ill is not "diverse" it is just not based in any sort of fact whatsoever. Believing in God is up to you. Thinking abortion is wrong is up to you but most ObGyns in this country are going to quarrel with you and not for religious reasons but medical ones. You can write about being Asian. Maybe there is something very specific you want to get across through the lens of your Asian identity.

For what it's worth, most physicians I have met are very conservative (I live in Texas). Maybe they are all liberals to you since I'm a socialist atheist but whatever.

It's a psychiatric disorder. Period.

A Muslim, anti-feminist, American nationalist who loves chique clothes and Donald Trump? Well, you certainly are an independent thinker I'll give you that.

Not according to the DSM 5, which, as a physician, is your guide to psychiatric disorders. There's no room for political/religious opinion in diagnosis.
You think the dsm is the end all be all? You might be right but judging from what I've read in the psychiatry forum nearly every psychiatrist would disagree. I'm pretty sure even the authors would disagree. Let's not forget that homosexuality used to be classified as a mental disorder, so the dsm has been wrong before. @whopper can you chime in please?

It's neither a political nor a religious opinion; it's one solely based on reason and clinical judgement. Identification with the opposite sex is a psychiatric disorder. Just as identification as a hawk or a lamb would be. I would also consider an adult who identifies as a child to be a person suffering from a psychiatric disorder. By the way, I think it's super cute that you think there's "no room for political/religious opinion in diagnosis..." Medicine, as a field, is not immune to pressure from political winds.

I agree. Transsexuality used to be listed as a disorder. It is not anymore. So I would believe that they were wrong before if they've changed it.

I'm not here to get into a debate though. I just believe we should be following current scientific standards in our practice and not invoking our own opinions over someone else's health. I just don't think that's in the patient's best interest.

What are the "scientific standards" that led to the reclassification of transsexuality?
