I want to know what math classes are needed for the majority of medical schools. I was planning on taking calc 1 and calc 2 but saw on many medical school websites that 1 year of math is required and at least 1 semester of statistics. So I don't want to take 3 math classes because I hate math. Is this bad and should I just take all 3 math classes or stick to Calc 1 and stats 1. I mean if I have to take all 3 to be able to apply to all medical schools I will, but if it's not needed, that would be great.

*I'm not going to apply to all medical schools but I want to have all the prereqs to be able to is what I mean. I don't want to go to a schools website and realize I can't apply cause I'm missing a math class.

Go to the websites of all the schools you want to go to, and take all that you need for those schools. Don't be lazy, and do it the right way.
Statistics or Biostatistics, Calculus...but look at what schools you are applying to. There's no real answer as some require some calculus, some require just any college math, but now stats is becoming a new requirement.

That is the thing, I don't know where I want to go and I'm a freshman so I'm not worrying to much about where I want to go as much as I am worrying about keeping good grades. I just want to know what math classes most medical schools want from people who know. I am going to take Calc 1 but don't know if I should take Calc 2 or Stats 1 after that. I did do some research on medical schools and some say 1 semester of college level math and some say 1 year of math and stats is recommended. So I'm leaning more towards Calc 1 and Stats 1.

That's your best bet. Some people take two semester with the physics course. But you defiantly should take statistics. I took it as an AP credit in HS. It's easier than Calculus, but it's a lot of work for one answer.

It seems as a bio major I have to take calc 3. Is this the norm? Seems strange I have to take 3 semesters of calc for biology.

That does seem odd. Normally you might have to take differential and integral calculus because of calc based physics. I do not see any reason to take multivariate calculus other than if you love math or you are a physics/math major.

Thanks greenblade, I'll have to confirm with my counselor but that just seems strange. Man I hope I'm wrong.

All biology majors at my school require Calc 3.

Totally comes in handy when counting wood duck eggs.

It depends on the school OP. If you absolutely don't want to go that high in math, you may find other majors more interesting.

I don't even think your degree will let you take only cal 1

Some bio programs allow students to only take calc I if they are taking alg-based physics. Those who want to go above and beyond (ie calc-based) need calc I & II.

May I ask where you are going to school at?

It's a UC. I'm pretty sure there are other UC's like this. I should clarify. There are some bio majors that HAVE to take Calc 3 and others who have a choice to either take Calc 3 or calculus based statistics, but it's still a requirement. Most people just end up taking Calc 3 to finish the series. I'm actually in Calc 3 this quarter. 😛

So technically you are completing 1 year of cal, which I guess is standard.

Not me. I passed out of Calc 1 and 2 from AP credit, so I'm going to take Linear Algebra and Diff. Equations. Took statistics already, but it wasn't nearly rigorous enough for me to feel safe counting it as one of my math courses.
