In light of the recent explosion of threads titled "what BLANK are you getting for medical school" I thought I would throw this out there. I'm getting a simmons beauty rest (with pillow top). I really wanted to get a tempur pedic, but I don't have $4k to spend.

 This one actually applies to me because we will be getting a new mattress. Not sure what kind but unfortunately it will not likely be a pillowtop. We have a wonderful Queen size pillowtop now but my husband can't sleep on it because it makes his back hurt. My daughter and I love it though. 😉 We're planning on getting a king size so we can all fit if the need arises, which it will.

That is so true. We are going from a queen to a king for the extra space as well. It will be a big change though, since we wont allow our daughter to jump on the bed anymore. She LOVES jumping on our bed.

Hmmm. We need a new bed also, but I think it will wait until we are settled wherever we are going to be. I have to say, going for the king was the best thing that we ever did. After 3 kids, there have been enough nights when one of them was with us that it definately paid off (plus there has to be room on the bed for the cats. Also extremely helpful for us, when we moved our kids to "big kid" beds, we got full size instead of a twin! Now, in the inevitable evenings that we need to lay with them for a while we are actually comfortable.

I'm getting one that is circular and rotates

get velvet sheets for it 👍

Someone should start a "what mirrors are you getting for the ceiling in your bedroom" thread, because I think that goes without saying.

I hate Shaq, but I would love to have his bed. It's freakin huge, and looks very comfortable!!!!

Yeah, I'm just pretty much used to waking up every night with my 2 yr old laying across my head. It's just not enough for him to be in the same bed.🙂

How does anyone hate Shaq. As a Spurs fan, I hated when they'd play against him on the Lakers, but just because he's so freaking awesome. As a former post player, he is one I always admired. How a guy that size can be so quick and agile is just beyond me.

Yeah so my daughter and I share the entire queen bed just us two. If she wakes up she will come to me, throw her little leg over me and go back to sleep on my chest. My husband doesn't know how I manage to breathe with an extra 23 pounds or so on me. She likes to sleep on the same pillow with me and when I wake up I'm practically falling off the bed because she's taking up half of my half of the bed and leaving the other half empty.

Ha ha. So cute. My son and I sleep together everynight too and that's exactly what he does also. He can have five pillows on his side of the bed but he has to be on the same one as me and have as much of his body touching me as possible which means laying over me. I don't really mind bc I know it'll have to end eventually and then I will be sad. 🙁

On a side note, I have the best pillow in the world. It is a Tempurpedic, I believe, and I have to take it with me everywhere if I will be sleeping or else!

Nice prions! But where did you get a picture of my bedroom? 😕

Man, that would be so awesome to have a bed like that!

Hmmm I might have to check that out. Right now I have a horrible headache again and I don't know if it has something to do with my sleeping. My son and husband actually sleep together on an air mattress on the futon. For a while I was pushing for him to stay in his crib all night but then my husband pointed out that they won't be this little forever so now I embrace it. I just want to at least get us all in the same bed. Maybe if I will the lottery I can get one made just like Shaq's.

OK, if you are interested I went and checked the pillow out and I was wrong, the pillow is by Sleep Innovations and they come in a pack of two at Sam's for 30 or 40 dollars, I think. It is memory foam but looks like a normal pillow. I swear it is the best thing ever! Oh, there might be better ones that are way more expensive, I don't know. These seemed pretty expensive to me. Good luck on getting a new bed.

I'll have to check that one out. I have a thing with pillows. I am constantly buying them trying to find the right one.

I admire that you can sleep with your kids on you. For some reason, both of my older ones (3 and 5) have to be laying accross the bed when they sleep in our bed. My son has to have his feet under you and is constantly kicking. My daughter has bad allergies and breathes soo loud when she sleeps and is constantly stirring. I just don't sleep when they are in our bed.

Definitely check it out. 👍 I've had this conversation so many times with other mothers and most of the mothers and sometimes fathers I know with children under about 5 sleep with their kids but are usually embarassed to say so. I just find that very interesting about our culture.

I guess for me it seems like people do and will judge me if they find out what our sleeping arrangements are. My husband talks about in the "olden" days that children used to always (or at least often) sleep with their parents. I'm not sure why it seems so taboo now. Of course the goal is for my husband and I to sleep in the same bed again but that requires getting a new mattress that's firmer and that won't likely happen until we move to AZ.

I don't know. It seems natural to me. I kind of agree with your husband. Just the thought of them being scared in a dark room all by themselves and not knowing why or being able to ask why, since they can't talk, they are being forced to stay there seems like it would be terrifying to a little baby. But, since they can't talk, they aren't able to vocalize how terrifying it is. It may become a little bit more of a habit once they hit 3 or so, but who cares, they're only little once. At least that is the way I see it.

I just bought a new bed, and it cost a TON of money, but I'm a wicked insomniac and thought it would a) help me sleep better or b) at least I'd be comfortable laying awake at night. Btw, I am very comfortable right now. Anyway, it's a Kingsdown and it's awesome. The best part is, I got two free latex pillows with it. Sounds weird, but latex pillows are amazing. 😍

I hate shaq too. He's old, fat, lazy and will never be as good as he once was because he weighs to damn much and keeps screwing up his knees and ankles. I mean come on, the guy got a pity 2nd string offer for the All-Star game because he was too lame to play but people wanted to still be respectful.

Anyway ... I've stored that rant for a long time.

About the bed ... is no one taking the hammock route?

Keep 'em coming, baby. F the haters.

LOL TT - You give up on your Rick sig?

Other than my former high-mileage mattress above, the only thing of value I can add to this thread is that I can attest to the fact that once you go Tempurpedic - you'll never go back.

Wow, testimony for it? I've been curious about a new mattress. I currently have a cheapy Ikea one on their cheapy wireframe from undergrad so I'm looking for an upgrade.

Not sure what exactly we have, as my wife had it prior to us being together.... but it's a decent quality mattress and then we have a feather bed topper thing on top of that.....VERY comfy.

Would like to try a tempurpedic though at some point....

My Tempur Pedic is the best $ I have ever spent. We spend about 25%-33% of our lives sleeping. Its worth the $.

PS, you can get a Tempur Pedic for way less than $4K. Got a deal where mine came with 2 Tempur Pedic Pillows as well. Shop around.

Is is usual to get a new mattress for school? Maybe it's because I'm from East Bumble, but I've been sleeping on the same mattress for ten years, and there is a perfect, little, my-body-shaped hole in my side of the bed that is super comfy. I don't think I'll ever get a new mattress. Also, that mattress is old....like probably from the seventies; we got it at my grandfather's house. Oh well....happy shopping! I'm sticking with my retro version.

Okay I don't know if that's such a good thing. Sounds like one day that hole will just suck you in and you'll be lost forever. :meanie:

So scary, reminds me of the Nightmare on Elm movie where the little boy gets sucked into his bed! 😱 Have you seen that?

I have seen every NOES. And I was allowed to watch them at way too early of an age. Bad move on my mom's part. Probably why I'm suspected of donating 200 kidneys. :meanie:

I have a KS Sealy Posturepedic Reserve that has the memory foam on top.

It's wonderful!!!! I also have a QS Stearns and Foster pillowtop. My best friend wanted to be my new roommate the first time she ever slept on it. Said it was the best night's sleep she ever had.

I didn't pay anywhere close to retail for either mattress. There's an outlet place in Middle Tennessee called Sleepwell. They beat all the 'Mattress King' and 'Mattress Outlet' prices by a pretty good size margin. I think I paid less than $1k total for both mattresses.

🙂

Good luck to ya'll!

EDIT: For the record, I'm not in med school, been accepted, or even applied. Just sharing what I have and love.

No, I'm not big into scary movies. I bet that little boy was comfy though. Scared .....but comfy. Naw, I guess it's more of a dent than a hole, but I love it!

It would nice if I would be able to use my mattress. It is usually morning by the time I am finished stuying.😀😀😀 😴😴😴

Sleep number baby. Sleep number!

I'm sleeping on an air mattress these days. If you get a quality one, you won't feel the difference. It may also be more practical. Think about it: You'll live at your new place for 2, maybe 3 years, if you're lucky. Then you gotta pack it all up and take off wherever your fourth year electives take you. Having an air mattress is more practical than having to sell your bed, or taking it with you.

Just some food for thought.
