I know this isn't exactly what WAMC is for but I am a few weeks into MCAT prep and want to get an idea of what score I need to get for my list. Of course, the list will definitely change if the score is not good but I have had this list for a few years and I really love it. Mods can delete if inappropriate.

1. cGPA 3.89 sGPA 3.86
2. ~ MCAT
3. Utah, undergrad here too.
4. asian male (ORM)
5. Average state school
6. 400 hours pharm tech, 1200 hours psychiatric technician for inpatient clinic
7. 2 years (1200 hours) in a microbio and biomaterials lab, 3 pubs as co-author, one as first under review. One year on an oncology database research group (250 hours), 2 abstracts as co-author. Couple thousand hours in a research lab in microbio in high school, competed internationally w/ research but I think HS stuff isn't included.
8. 30 hours oncology shadowing, 30 hours ID (what I wanna be), 20 family medicine
9. 2000+ hours at local temple (my house of worship, don't know if that skews it), doing it since 2014. 40 hours at HIV clinic.
10. CFO of an undergraduate international research journal, 650 hours all volunteer based. Coordinator for a stem education outreach program, 800 hours. Journalist for a local think tank, 250 hours.
11. Nothing really in college awards wise. Deans List most semesters maybe?
12. both parents have graduate degrees.

I'm not entirely sure since it's more than just grades/MCAT that makes the cut but I would suggest a 515+. Especially since you have schools like Vandy on here that are big on stats.

Well, your list ranges from Harvard and others at the high end MCAT to MCW and Quinnipiac at the lower end MCAT. So, that's like maybe 510-520. Recommend using MSAR to identify median MCAT of accepted IS and OOS students. That list is pretty top heavy even with 516 MCAT, IMO.

I would remove: UNC and UTSW both for heavy in-state bias (you could always replace them with schools like Duke or Baylor if you just like the area, but your list is a bit top-heavy already, so I might consider something in the middle like Miami and Emory—of course none of this advice is any good until you have an actual MCAT score).

Like other users have said, your list has a wide range, so if you want Vermont or VA Tech, a 512-13 should do it. If you want Harvard, JHU, or Vandy, a 520 is a good idea, especially because those schools have a ton of other Utah BYU kids to compare you against. Utah is kind of a crappy state to be a pre-med.

Okay thanks guys. What are some good schools I could add to my list to even it out? And aside from UNC and UTSW any other schools that are bad for out of state?

And oof it's that bad huh? I stay out of premed circles at the U which is why I probably never noticed it. Are you from Utah? Are kids here generally more competitive or something?

You could delete Minnesota and U-Wisconsin as both take few OOS if no ties. From Harvard down to Vandy on your list (less North Carolina which you should probably remove as another poster noted), you'll need a stellar MCAT (like 517+ as another poster indicated).

Thanks. any good lower tier (but good in research) schools to replace Minnesota, UNC, and Wisconsin that are OOS friendly? Also is my father doing his postdoc at Wisconsin ties lol

Anything specifically that would make me good for there? Are they research heavy? thanks
They're not research heavy but it's a plus. They do some just fine research. But what they are is very community based and very service oriented and it seems like, I hope for the right reasons, you have a lot of that and so I think that would be more than appropriate to look at should they see your application.

I’m from CA, but I went to BYU. Tbh I’m not sure about the U of U, but BYU is one of the top pre-med producers (in terms of quantity it’s number 18 behind the UCs and JHU and those schools). At my U of U interview 10/16 of us were from BYU haha. Big problem in Utah is you have a lot of premeds and only 1 MD school, which is why Utah has one of the lowest matriculation rates. Then again, simply NOT being a white BYU student might give you an in for “diversity” at the U.

I go to the U, didn't know BYU was so pre-med heavy so that's fun now that there are 2 huge pre-med factories in the state lol

517+

You havew quite a spread there. A 517 may get you resource protected out of Netter.

Also note: UNC heavily favors Tarheels, and Va Tech like people from the Appalachians. U UT and U MN also favor the home team.

Was waiting for your reply, so thank you!

How is the rest of the profile looking for T20 research school eligibility with a 517+ MCAT?

And thank you for those school guides. I go to UUtah so safe there, sad to hear about VA Tech. Will still keep it on these though I like the school a lot. Any suggestions for schools to add to the list to keep me in MD range assuming I could get an MCAT of, say, 520, or do poorly and get a 509? I am trying to have a solidified list of approx 35 schools and will shear off the unattainable once the MCAT is done. Only rules are to avoid Florida and Cali...basically, anywhere it doesn't really snow.
