How common is it for a doctor to work 40 hours a week or less including call? What specialties are conducive to this sort of lifestyle? If one doesn't have debt to pay off is it easy to find part time work (for reduced pay of course)? I guess what i'm asking is can you make a good lifestyle/relatively low stress job out of being a doctor if you aren't burdened by debt?

If lifestyle is your main goal (and it definitely looks like it based on your post history) do all of us a favor and don't be a doctor. You're going to end up being that miserable and lazy med student/resident everyone hates working with. Be a healthcare admin cause being lazy, hassling other people and collecting an undeservedly high paycheck seems to be what you're looking for.

How many hours are in the average physician workweek?

It appears that very few doctors work less than 40 hours, often pediatricians, dermatologists, and child and adolescent psychiatrists. However, it looks like this is also dependent on age. Getting one of these jobs, even in a low-stress geographical area, doesn't mean you'll have low hours right out of residency. You may be required a decade of work before you are able to make your hours like this.

Good find.

Don't many ER physicians work three or four 12-hour shifts a week? Puts you anywhere from 36-48 hours/week - but that path is definitely a lifestyle profession that not everyone can handle. I also assume you probably are working quite a few undesirable night shifts, especially earlier in your career.
