I believe that surgical oncology is a fellowship, usually three years in length, that follows a five-year GS residency.

General Surgical residency (5-7 years). Most academic residencies have now switched to 6 years. Academic residencies will get you best placement and for fellowship. Onc fellowships are generally at least 2 years...18 months of clinical work, 6 months of dedicated research time, some are more (3 yrs). You're looking minimum 7 years, more likely 8.
Don't let these numbers scare you too much though. Remember, if you're gonna specialize in almost any field, its gonna be at least 6 years in most cases. Cardiology for example 3 yrs int med, 3 yrs fellowship, Peds GI, same thing, and the list continues. So 6-8 years doesn't look too bad after all.

in addition to what has been said, I've heard that a surg onc fellowship is one of the more competitive fellowships, along with pediatric surgery (do a search on SDN and there's plenty of information about surg onc)... seems like a fascinating field

General Surgery --> Surgical Oncology fellowship

Alternatively, there's the "surgical oncology" in
Ob/Gyn --> Gynecologic Oncology (also highly surgical)
