Hi i will be junior this upcoming fall. I want to know what are my chances of being accepted to a DO or MD. What should I do to better my chances?

My overall science GPA is 3.0, and my cumalative GPA is 2.9, because I had a realy bad first semester as a freshman due to me working full time, and health issues.

Currently preparing for the MCAT.

I am the chief ER scribe at ocshner hospital, and shadow multiple DO's and MD's.

I am also in the biology club, and plan on getting my masters in health sciences.

I also plan on vounteering.

Thanks for your help!

I think most people will agree on this forum that your gpa will hold you back. Trust me, I definitely understand bad semesters: my gpa is what has held me back also. As far as DO schools go, they allow you to retake courses (as long as the credits are equal or more the next time around). So say you did got a few Cs in some of your science courses: RETAKE THOSE. Getting a 4.0 credit A instead of a 4.0 credit C is definitely a major gpa booster.

Obviously you would need to do well on your MCAT - the better you do, obviously, the more it can offset a lower GPA. With that low of a GPA you would probably need to get in the high 20s to be considered for DO schools (maybe a little lower depending on the school, some would argue, but it is getting more competitive). And since MD schools do not do grade replacement (they do grade averaging I believe), you would definitely need to get in the 30s for an MD school. Unless you are a URM, in which case you can probably get a little bit lower in terms of the numbers I've listed.

Your extracurriculars look good. An ER scribe is great experience. And an adequate amount of shadowing is also important - while a DO letter isn't required for all schools, a lot of them will recommend it and it definitely will help you out, in my opinion. Also, as someone with a master's degree, it definitely helps you stand out, but if you can retake classes to boost your gpa, you may not want to waste the money that obtaining a master's entails.

Hope that helps 🙂

As of right now, chances at MD are 0% and very low for DO.

If you can ace ALL of your classes over the next 2 years, you might be competitive for both.

Failing that, an SMP or post-bac program might be needed to show AdComs you can handle medical school, which right, you haven't. And that's even without the MCAT!

Look into grade replacment for the DO route too.

What exactly is the distinction between "chief" ER scribe and all the other ER scribes? You've worked there the longest and/or are the fastest typer?

:/ ok thanks.

yes, so do you have any expert advice for me? 🙂

My answer to the thread title is: None since with a 3.0/2.9 you can expect to get rejected from everywhere you apply unless you do very well on the MCAT. Also it's pointless to make a school list before you're actually ready to apply.

My answer to the question in the OP: Improve your GPA, don't get anymore Cs, and take the MCAT seriously.

This guy's right. Did you 4.0 all of your sophomore year? If you can continue this, they'll appreciate the upward trend, but ultimately they'd prefer the 4.0. If you ace the remainder of your classes and knock the MCAT out of the park (think mid 30s), you'll be geared up for DO or MD.

Good luck!
