I know it's competitive, but do some schools have more spots available each year than others? The school I am primarily interested in only takes 3-4 students a year... so now I am thinking about applying to other schools which may give me a better shot at getting into the field.

Why orthodontistry?

good question - i think it has to do with the money - and work (or lack of work)

orthodotics don't have to 'set up shop' anywhere - their patients are reffered to them from local dentists (these dentists cannot deal with the complex situations of the patient - so they are sent to the orthodotist)

the orthodonist does not have to spend much on tools/equipment - since it is a very specialized field in dentistry - his work is simple/efficient and COSTLY

orthodontics basically have it set (if this is what your looking for):

MONEY (much more than a general practitioner)

LESS HOURS (much less than a general practitioner)

LESS WORK/DEMAND/STRESS (much less than a general practitioner)

LESS MANAGEMENT/EMPLOYMENT (much less than a general practitioner)

LESS COST (much less than a...you got the point)

BUT: If that's not what your looking for (i.e. ianwright) then RECONSIDER!!!

CONSIDER PUBLIC HEALTH OR ACADEMICS!!!

UOP has around 8 spots per year i think.

By the way, many people end up going to a facility different from where they got their dds when specializing. So don't limit yourself so early based on a specialty that you may or may not end up doing.

Just remember that money won't make you truly happy, OK?

It will pay the bills, and will set you with a nice retirement. Of course, there are other things that will make you very happy like helping poor people. Maybe traveling overseas to help the poor? It will be nice to help your family, parents etc...

Make sure you will love doing ortho. once you are done. There's nothing more depresing than studying this hard for yrs and then do such a long training, only to hate driving to work.

Money is nice for few days, and then what?

I totally belive that is wrong to do anything just for money. We have a hole to fill up in this universe. We have a purpose in this life. Find yours so that you are truly happy.

Good luck and be happy. Life's too short!

Dental Mom - I totally agree with your post - but, some people's purpose in life is MONEY. They think GREEN and always will. It's a shame that these people seek DENTISTRY to fullfill there GREEN dreams. It makes me feel sick to my stomach! I just want to enter the academic/public health realm of dentistry and maybe do some research on current issues like the use of florides in water, and also concentrate on 'whole body dentistry' and look for a connection between gum disease and heart disease. All of these 'dreams' of mine are not influenced by MONEY, and MONEY does not infuence my 'dreams'. What do you guys think?

I think you are giving people too much credit...there are many, many people who can be truly happy making money, even if it means they hate the work they are doing. Heck, if you give me 1 million a year, I would be a gardener, and I hate plants.

Luckily, dentistry interests me, so I get the best of both worlds.

Hey bud - get it right! look at the title of the other thread, it is - 'YOUR' number one reason for pursing dentisty! When I wrote 'money', I am refering to other people (the part that says 'your') and what they think is the number one reason - why I waste time responding to these kinds of accusations - I don't know! So get YOUR facts right!

Give me the salary of an orthodontist and I could be happy as a respiratory therapist for the rest of my life. And I hate my job.

yikes.. When did I ever say it was for the money??? If I was all about the $$ there are plenty of other fields I could have entered (med for one!) Also, I asked a simple question.. I didn't ask for preaching.

BTW - I do agree that people shouldnt be doing this if their sole purpose is money.

best program for ortho? what do you think......probably 1-Harvard 2- Uconn 3- Upenn 4-UoP 5- UNC......you know...the top tier schools

Unless you can dig up a medical specialty with 30-hour workweeks, no call, and >$300,000 net incomes, this argument falls apart pretty quickly.

How about UCLA? That is the only school I will attend.

Dermatology!

Ok, she wants to do it for the money.. SO WHAT??

Is that to say every orthodontist is doing orthodontistry because he has a wire FETISH?? Or enjoys wire bending??

Obviously, she likes the lifestyle the job offers him. And it makes sense its the most competitive specialty.

I definitely dont think one should do something for the sole purpose of money, cuz that can only keep you happy so long. You defintiely gotta love what you do. But if the money is good, lets not bash others intentions without even knowing the truth.

Lets not be haters.....

In every salary survey I've seen, orthodontics well surpasses derm. That isn't to say exceptions don't exist, but on average it seems to be the case.

They both seem to me to be in the same ball park hrs, lifestyle, amount of stress, and income 250-400K is about the range for the majority of professionals in both fields after they have worked for a couple of years. Who knows about those salary surveys anyways.

OK, but even allowing that doesn't really shore up the OP's suggestion that medical specialties are preferable to dental. If I concede the income issue, I think it's fair for me to postulate that the two fields are similarly difficult to get into.

And, way too many people on this board can't tell the difference between hate & simple disagreement.

all u self righteous people are lame, the poor girl asks a simple question about orthodontics and all you guys high jack this thread to tell us how you just want to save the world and teach, she didn't ask that and we don't care. 😴

Ianwright:

Reading some of your previous posts, YOU ARE A RIOT! (What I mean is that you are a clown, a jester). Your inconsistency is hilarious. You use these catchy sexual posts to get attention, then you apologize. I haven't read through all your posts, but its all very fluffy. Thanks for diversifying SDN. I personally would not take anything you say seriously. It only has comic value.
