I'm currently trying to plan out what I'm going to be doing for the following school year and was wondering if I could get an opinion on which set of ECs would look more impressive out of these two sets:

1. Spend next year volunteering at a hospital and working as a scribe for a physician who specializes in rheumatology

or

2. Spend next year volunteering at a hospital, youth soccer coach volunteer, suicide hotline volunteer, and joining a club that makes monthly trips to mexico to help out a clinic serving the underprivileged.

Since the scribe job will take up so much time, I feel it would be better for me to get a more diverse set of ECs but I wanted to get the opinion of people on SDN.

Why don't you do whichever sounds like more fun or maybe try to learn something and improve yourself? Do them for the sake of expanding your horizons and not impressing people with a short description on an application.

Beyond that... How impressive things look on an application varies greatly and depends on what you got out of them and what YOU did, not the day to day what you did.

The second option is more interesting to me but since my ultimate goal is to get into medical school, I was just curious which one looks better on paper

One good tip about the application process is, don't be boring. Do as many unique, interesting things that you can that will make you stand out.

And this is my point, it is irrelevant what it looks like on paper. One can describe the most boring activities on the planet in bright colors on paper. There is an entire industry for that, its called advertising. Stop trying to sound impressive and try to BE impressive. Stop trying to figure out how to sell yourself. Work hard, try to produce as much as you can, live your life, then sell yourself the best that you can on your application. Don't decide what you are going to do with your time based on an application a couple years down the road.

Do something that represents you--if that makes sense. Maybe do both if you can...
