I'm transferring from one psych residency to another. I am transferring to a good solid program and I am pretty sure their pgy-3s have a lot more knowledge than the soon to be pgy3s at my current program and myself.
I'm not going to be able to catch up right away, but I was hoping to get a bit of a head start but I don't know what I should know as a pgy-3 and I'm not sure where to read or what to start with.

Don't worry too much. Did you do mostly inpatient psych in 2nd year? 3rd year in traditional programs is when residents see more outpatients, and less inpatients. Outpatient psychiatry seems like it is almost a different specialty at times compared to inpatient psychiatry, so everybody has to change their approach and learn how to treat outpatients. My advice - do as much psychotherapy as you can in 3rd year if you have any opportunity, typically you won't get a better chance.

The cool thing about transferring is you will bring some perspectives and ways of approaching patients that are probably a little different than at your new institution, and residents and attendings will probably be curious to know about what you have learned and seen at your old program, good and bad that might help improve their practice. I found this was the case when I transferred for fellowship.
