I am a 23 year old psychology major with an average GPA (3.5). Last year I decided I wanted to go to med school and since then I been trying to do all of the extracurriculars and to get all the prerequisites in order to be able to apply to med school. I already took bio1 bio2 chem1 and chem2. I obtained As in all of them and next semester I am going to take orgo 1 physics 1 and genetics. I have around 35 hours of volunteering in a hospital and I haven't been able to start to do research. I was co founder and vice president of the international association in my community college for the first two years of my bachelor degree (which then I finished in a University) but besides that I have no extracurriculars ( well my job, I used to work as a retail representative). Plus I have no letters of recommendation ( I am not one to get close to professors although I know I need to, its just I am kind of shy). I did have good communication with my bio 1 professor but I don't know if he actually remembers me, even less if he can write a good letter of recommendation for me. I am planning to take physics 2 and orgo 2 in the winter (jan to may) while studying for the mcat in order to present it in April and then after that take biochemistry in the first part of the summer ( most of the schools in florida require it ). Obviously I am planning to keep on volunteering and to do research (at lest start to do so) while taking this classes. If I am able to do all this I would be applying late ( july ) to med school. My question is should I try to accomplish this ? or should I apply in 2014 instead and start med school when I am 26 and a half? Thank you to all in advance I really appreciate it 🙂

July is not too late. I didn't even take my MCAT until Aug 4th. I'm also 31, so starting at 26 looks just fine from where I'm standing. As far as letters go, it's time to man up. If you're going to be a doctor that means spending your life getting chummy with complete strangers. No mo' excuses, just start developing a rapport with those proffs and getting some letters.

Try to shadow a doc somewhere. Typically that counts as volunteer hours. Then get a letter from the doc. 3.5 is a good GPA. Rock your MCAT and firm up those letters and EC's and you'll be good to go.

Do everything in your power to get your AMCAS app submitted on the very first day and have everything ready to go by then. You really do put yourself at a disadvantage applying late. If you have no other option than to apply in July, then it is what it is. But, the earlier the better.

Thank you both for replying I really appreciate it 🙂 So in conclusion you both believe I should try to apply this year? or you believe I should improve my EC, take some more classes and then have the chance to apply early? Because if I want to apply in 2013 I will have to apply in the middle of july. Thank you again 😀

Depends on your MCAT score really. If you can get above a 30, I'd say go for it. 28-30 gives you a shot still. Sub 28 I'd try again.

Why would you need to apply in the middle of July? Could you apply sooner than that, since your MCAT scores will be in well before then?

So you do think I have enough time to improve my EC? also what about preparing for the MCAT while taking physics 2 and organics 2 do you believe that is recomendable? I cant apply before because I have to take biochemistry in the first part of the summer in order to apply to most universities in florida.
