Hello Everyone I'm new at SDN 🙂
I Hope ill find some ideas and help here .. im a pre-med student (biochem major)and my dream its to get into DO med schools ..but I don't think ill ever get in because I have done so many mistakes with my classes i have failed 3 classes right now and that's because really i had so many things to do and work.. this time im thinking taking a semester off do something work and come back again
I have a 2.8 sgpa right now and I have like 70 credits I still have more classes to go but im scared those 3 f will kill me
For the 1st f i retook that class and i got an A. now i have to retake 2 more and i think im going to get an A
classes that i f are calculus1 orgo2 and bio2 I was so stupid i cant even believe it ..
So guys do you think even if i retake those classes and get A for the 2nd time do i have any chance getting into DO med schools?
I also have many extra act.volunteer at ER, working as a cna etc.. actually what worries me its my low gpa and the classes that i got an f
and I heard that they do replace the highest grade which is true but do they see the previews grades?
thank you 😳

Hello SDN
I posted this thread last year and because of my low gpa and failed classes I decided to take a semester off. But I ended up taking a year off..
During that year I really missed school and I definitely know I want to become a doctor 🙂 .. I volunteered at the ER I did many volunteer hrs and I'm going to continue it ..
I don't actually have any question from you guys I just need a 'Good Luck' 🙂
I'm starting school next week.
I feel much better lol last year I was a little sad too :/
Thanks for ur courage and help God Bless 🙂

maybe you can also lessen the load a bit so you do manage to concentrate on your classes more

i don't think a couple f's will kill you as long as you realize what why how etc you got to where you are and do better

there are many stories of people recovering from low gpa's to get into med school

Honestly if you take anymore hits to your GPA you will be out of the running. And if you make F's steadily then the MCAT will be tough for you. Buckle down. Don't overload yourself and good luck!🙂

From what I've read around here they only see your most recent grade so your F's will be replaced by whatever you get the second time around. Like others mentioned, focus and keep your eye on the prize so you don't have a slip up again. I had a mediocre gpa but finished with my last 100 hours with a 3.8+, plenty of people have gone through this issue and have surpassed this additional obstacle that we place upon ourselves.

Nope, they see all of your grades, even the Fs. They don't get calculated into your GPA though, so I doubt any ADCOM is going to whip out the calculator and try to figure out what your GPA is including the F grades. As far as how much it impacts your application, they "say" its minimal if you've demonstrated academic prowess and retook the class to receive the better grade.

Rather than stress out when your in a GPA crisis (or any crisis for that matter)... grab a calculator and paper and do the math. You know your grades up to this point... replace those F's with A's (because you say you can ace them), then find out what your new GPA will be. Then figure out what classes you WILL be taking in your upcoming years... and realistically play with the grades and see how the numbers turn out. It's actually quite fun to do.

Doing this allows you to focus and stop worrying... because your answer will be right on that paper. Then, create a plan to carry it out... whether it's changing your study habits or whatever... and stick to the plan.

Going from an F to an A looks great! Schools will see the F, but it kind of becomes irrelevant if your new grade is an A/B. So keep up the good work, and relax. 🙂 👍

Good to know, thanks.

Blah blah blah... I graduated with a 2.79, I had 3 Fs, 3 Ds, and retook only 2 of each, and still made it in after completing 80cr of PB work at <3.8. OP you're not out of the game yet, but you need to start caring about your grades and pull down a serious GPA from now on, like a 3.75+...

Thank you Yes I know that But I got a a little scared because I Have 2 since grades are really important for med school but thank you 🙂

Yes I should do that thx I feel much better now 🙂

As people have already mentioned, they replace the grade in the gpa but they will still see your full transcript and even if they just do a quick scan they will see 3 F's. So you have to be ready to explain these if you get an interview. I personally would stay away from the "I had too much to do" excuse because adcoms are looking for people who can balance a tremendous workload and still be successful. They are also looking for mature individuals who take responsibility for their mistakes. So be prepared to have a responsible answer to why you failed 3 courses rather than an excuse. Good luck, I hope you can turn things around

I got in at medical school with your sGPA. I was certainly an outlier, but I did it.

I also got a pretty decent MCAT to offset it and had a really impressive extra-curricular portfolio though.

I failed calculus, retook it and made a C (how's that for owning things the second time around), but the fact of the matter is that I got in. And in meeting with the admissions committee at my school they told me it wasn't even a hard decision to admit me.

Anyway, you're in better shape than I was because you still have time to bring things up. Retake those classes, and start doing better from here on out. Then do well on the MCAT and you'll do fine.

Best of luck!

SLC

The good news is, as mentioned, while they still see the F's they will not count on your AACOMAS application which is good because it will keep you above the initial cutoff for most if not all DO schools.

So at the very least you should be able to get your foot in the door. However, with 3 fails (especially required sci courses), you will need to demonstrate that you are capable and that these were in fact due to bad circumstances/decisions that you have learned from. The quickest way to do this is with a nice, high MCAT score, so take the time and work really hard on the MCATs.

After that the stronger your app in every other way the better, so volunteer, get letters from DOs, research...If you can put together a really strong application other than the 3Fs that should be enough to get you an interview at which point you can obviously charm them and have a chance to explain the 3 Fs and how its made you a better student in the end.

Good Luck

Learn to write a paragraph and quit partying so much. You'll be fine.

Another question because I'm a little confused
How many classes is allowed to retake for DO? does it hurt your chances if you retake many classes??

I remember from when I was a premed, and from reading the posts on this website that undergrads often look for a magic recipe to get them into school..... there really isn't any

Sometimes people with a 2.7 sgpa get in and sometimes people with a 4.0 sgpa don't get in......

Obviously good grades, good mcat, solid extracurriculars/volunteer activities, alumni support and just flat out being a good person increase your statistical chance of getting in but in my experience you just have to trust in the universe that the right thing will happen

Retake any D or F.

Re-take NON-ENGINEERING Calculus 1 at a community college (CC) with a teacher that is known to be easier, it doesn't look as bad if you turn it into an A.

You will need to restudy Orgo1 material again before moving on to Orgo2. Get an appointment with your prior teacher to see what areas you need to focus on and get 1 on 1 tutoring for those areas from the University-recommended resource or tutoring center before you attempt Orgo2. You must do really well on this area as well as on your MCAT to be competitive.

A good stand-alone solutions manual that explains concepts really well:

While we're at it, this helps out in OChem lab:

For Bio, replace that F at your university with the same class, then get A's in 3 more upper division Bio classes there, but they don't have to be there or all at the same time and possibly take one while you're taking the Calculus class at the CC. Upper division classes will always look better than lower division, but taking one of them at a CC while taking Calculus versus the uni will not matter in your situation. Just get the classes done and move on.

Use the rest of the time to get active in some sort of medical setting that you described and get a LOR from the highest ranking officer there that will go into your applicant file.

AOA grade-replacement policy is the closest thing to magic without going to Hogwart's and you will definitely have a shot at DO school, so keep motivated and make full use of your uni tutoring center. CUT DOWN ALL EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES UNLESS THEY INVOLVE YOU BEING AROUND A BUNCH OF LONG WHITE COATS. Anything left, with the exception of eating and sleeping for 7 to 9 hours per night, should be for a maximum of 16 hours per week; I'd recommend 8. You definitely have a GOOD chance of getting in if you do.
