Hello!

I applied to pharmacy school this past cycle and I was wait listed for two schools. I was just accepted to my second choice school (California Northstate), and still waiting on my first choice (Western). I have been prepping myself for reapplying next cycle by applying for tech jobs and taking more classes to boost my GPA. Although I will probably accept my offer and hold out for Western, I am still not 100% set on CNUCOP for several reasons. Because of this, I am still considering reapplying for the next cycle if I don't get into Western. I know I should be grateful I was accepted, but I think the school I go to can affect my career goals. I heard that it doesn't make a difference which school you go to if you want to work in retail, but I don't want to work in retail. In this case, I'm worried that because CNUCOP doesn't have as much, for a lack of a better word, "prestige" than others schools in California (where I live), then I may have a harder time pursuing my career goals.

My biggest concern right now is whether I should work this summer. A month ago I was offered a job as a pharmacy technician, but the process has been taking so long that I still haven't even officially worked there and I don't know when I will. I really wanted this job, but now that it's so late into June and I may end up going to school in August, I'm not sure if I should still go for it. I just don't think it would be fair to work at a place for possibly a month and a half if I leave for school. But I'm still considering reapplying, which means this job would only help me to get more experience and I could work there for a whole year.

I'm kinda lost, and I would just like to hear what other people's thoughts are. Should I go for this job? Should I still even consider reapplying?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

if you really want to go to higher-ranked school, i.e. not going to CNU or WU, then you will be reapplying anyway. But tell the pharmacy where you got offered the tech job your situation. If they are ok with that, then there is no problem for you working there.

regarding schools, with the rate new pharmacy schools are opening, there will absolutely more and more schools and more and more pharmacy graduates who would compete for a very limited number of residencies and even jobs. Thus school ranking will play a more and more important role in the future. That will be the unavoidable reality for pharmacy. If you google and read about business schools or law schools, you will see that situation is happening now. If you do not go to a top ranked business/law schools, you will have very difficult time to find a job or no job at all.

Regarding waiting a year, you have to accept the possibility that you may get rejected next year and end up in the same situation, albeit a year later.

Regarding your statement that I bolded, I strongly urge you to consider not applying to pharmacy and choosing a career path. You will almost certainly go into retail.

Are you willing to pay for Northstate, do you know that they are not qualified for FAFSA so your interest rates are much higher? If yes, then you should go.

1 year is 130k worth of salary in CA

What do you call a person that graduated top of his class at the #1 ranked pharmacy program and a person that graduated at the bottom of his class at the lowest ranked accredited program????? A Pharmacist..... Honestly, with saturation in the metropolitan areas of the U.S., prestige in pharmacy wont cut it. As long as you pass the licensure exam for the state you want to work in, anyone hiring wont pick anyone over another based on school, if anything these days they may look at age and see how long you willing to work for them and your situation. That being said, "prestige" may help with scholarships and financial assistance, but to say its for the sole purpose of outcompeting competition is for the most part for this time of the season NOT true. Id personally aim for instate tuition or at least great scholarship opportunities if at all possible. For my undergrad in biochem, why would i blow quadruple the cost to get my degree at stanford when i can get benefits and nearly free school at a private school to obtain the same degree? Dont get me wrong, if you get in a ranked university congrats. But i wouldnt push a year of my future career path based on "prestige" when so many are competing for the same spot. More applicants apply year after year and schools keep expanding. Signs of the times for this career.

As far as whether to work for the summer, tell them your situation or just take it and if it comes up (acceptance) explain it was a last second "fix" that you got in. Any extra experience is great. Hope all goes well.
