It's time for this intern to buy some books with his tremendously generous book fund (sarcasm). I was wondering if I could get some feedback about a couple books.

Rivers' Board review book- I've heard mixed things. is this really the "gold standard" review book to have as a new intern and through residency? it's 1300 pages---the longest review book i've ever seen.

baby tintinalli- forgot the real name...saw it, and liked it b/c it could almost fit in my pocket. Plus I hate big books, but a few of my fellow residents say it sucks.

Thanks everyone!

Kind of an extension of the original question- what are some landmark EM studies that students/residents should definitely know?

come on folks, am i the only one who reads here?

I like Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas & Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology by Klauss Wolff, Richard. A. Johnson, Richard Suurmond. I don't want to post the Amazon link because you should link via SDN so they get credit if you buy it. I carry it around with me to use as a mug shot book for rashes. I hate rashes.

BTW I don't have any association with the book or the authors. I just use it and like it.

1. Pick Tintinalli or Rosen's everybody has their preferences. EM is your specialty and you should have a text. (Rivers is fine for review, inservice, boards but by no means a stand alone text). Flip through them and pick which ever one suits your fancy.
2. Roberts and Hedges procedure guide book. (not an absolute but very handy.) There are other procedure books out there but this is the one I use and that I recomend. (Also the Reichman and Simon text in procedures, some people prefer it.)
3. Knoop Atlas of Emergency Medicine. (ohhhhhh pictures)
4. Harris and Harris EM radiology. (Nice book don't know that I would ever have time to look at it if I had bought it.)

Anyway, those are the major texts that I can think of. Baby Tint if you want but I bought it and never use it. The new one is too bulky to carry and at my program we have texts in the ED so why bother. Happy shopping and save money for your beer fund
