What specialty are you interested in going into?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The best answer is that I don't know, and that I need to focus on getting into medical school first. That being said, I think some form of surgery would be most interesting to me.

ENT, Uro, Plastics = good mix of clinical and OR time

I mean, uh... pediatrics in an underserved rural area.

Peds heme/onc, Peds ID, Peds CC, anesthesia. It'll be interesting to see what I end up liking!

First goal is med school though. The chips can fall where they may after that.

Family medicine or OB-Gyn...honestly can't see myself doing anything else but who knows what will happen in med school. Maybe I'll really hate delivering babies

Surgery, probably vascular. Can't beat the feeling of the OR in my mind.

Emergency Medicine would be my choice.

Being given the opportunity to address and treat patients when they're in their most vulnerable state and then potentially save their lives... I'd love it. In any case, I'm 4 years away from medical school and there's a possibility my ideal specialty will change.

ID.

It's the greatest. Period.

What I could never do:

1.) surgery- I don't have the temperament
2.) optho- I like a variety of cases
3.) urology- eh..
4.) ob/ gyn- late night deliveries and high malpractice
5.) oncology- too depressing
6.) peds - the kids-- no kid likes the doctor

Other specialties I know too little about to make a judgement

why not peds anesthesia

If I did anesthesia, I probably wouldn't want to do a fellowship. Whereas I would NOTTTTT want to be a general paediatrician, so fellowship would be mandatory in that case.

EM, Rad Oncology, or probably IM honestly.

Just like everyone else on SDN, I can only see myself doing FM or peds

jk

Radiology
Radiation Oncology
Oncology

I don't think I'm the surgery type of person

FM or psych it looks for me.

Also interested in EM, IM, or OB-Gyn.

Who can tell, though.

I hope AdComs don't look at me and think I'm lying about actually wanting to go into Peds//PC. Of course, anything can change in 5-7 years, but other than ER, I don't have an interest in other specialties.

 ya'll make my life harder!

Interview answer: primary care
Real life answer: pathology 😎

Obviously, there are many different specialties outside of primary care. But is this really what medical schools aim to produce, PCPs? And how you should answer in an interview? Of course not everyone can be a PCP and not everyone really wants to go into that

Being way far from my goal ( starting undergrad this fall) i say oncology or surgery related, who knows a lot can change and probably will change

I imagine I don't really know until I get through a couple of years of school. That's how it ended up working with undergrad, anyway.

That said, I have a short list for now, apparently mostly the stuff people lie about to get to what they really want. FM for the people, Peds because kids are cooler than a-dults, or Psychiatry, which I never thought I'd be interested in until recently. Even more surprised to hear that it isn't the most competitive residency out there, I figured it'd be cutthroat. Again though, I want to poke around Nuclear or Genetics when I have the chance.

I'd rather be a main character in Game of Thrones than go into something like Pathology. And through high school I was hung up on being a surgeon until I shadowed one. My roommate is pre-law, and their divorce rates aren't too attractive either.

Milkman: there's a big fat shortage of primary care kinda folk for a handful of reasons; pay isn't as great, and you get truckloads of hypertension, diabetes, and the other kinds of things you'd get from a patient base of aging boomers. For that reason, there's an impression among pre-meds that it sounds noble in an interview to say that you want to be the world's greatest humanitarian and be a primary care pediatrician in a rural Montana walk-in clinic marching fifteen miles in the snow barefoot each day to work.

Yeah. Go read their bull**** mission statements. Of course they'll be the first ones to brag about their students matching into dermatology, ophthalmology, radiation, oncology, etc.

I plan on matching their bull****, if I get any interviews. Oh, yeah. I totally want to do primary care because I'm from a rural, underserved area and I've seen the problems that my community faces! 🙄

I think I would love psychiatry. Also I might be interested in internal medicine, particularly heme/onc (adults, not kiddos) but the lifestyle is too demanding. I can already rule out a lot of specialties just based on my personality.

Ok, I guess I'll answer now... 🙂
I always change my mind, so who knows, but here are my top 3 as of now
1. obgyn- the mix of surgery and patient care and contact, plus you do ultrasounds and simple procedures and you may see them more than once (if they decide to have more kids) which doesn't happen in many other specialties outside of FM and peds
2. endocrinology - specifically pediatric endocrinology just 'cause it's interesting
3. plastics- I'm kind of interested in the cosmetic side of plastics

Things I could never do:
1. radiology- general radiology (not the sub-specialities) because there is little to no patient contact
2. neurosurgery- it interests me, especially neuro-oncology, but I don't know if I could handle the stress of the job plus that is 10 years of just RESIDENCY. 😱
3. orthopedic surgeon- operating on bones freaks me out so bad.
4. derm- zits, acne, and moles. no thanks.
5. general surgery- yeah, changed my mind, no gen surg.

Anesthesia.

He's the only guy who gets to sit down during surgery. :naughty:

But I'm keeping my mind open.

I seem to be the only one so far interested in Neurology.

Oh well. More patients for me! 😎

I am interested in psychiatry. Things may change (im an incoming college freshman), but I am pretty set on becoming a psychiatrist 🙂

Rainyology.

Cardiology, especially EP. Although, I keep hearing that the market is totally saturated 🙁

This varies by school, though. If you are interviewing at a state school in a rural state that has a shortage of PCPs, than they are looking for people that want to go into FM and Peds. In addition to that, there are just many schools that make FM/Peds their focus, and their claim to fame. There are also many schools that are more focused on research, and are generally more geared towards a hospital and specialists setting than ambulatory/PCP care. Schools are looking for students to fit their "mission" or "culture", so whether an answer of FM or pediatric orthopedic trauma surgeon is better looked upon will largely depend on the school at which you are interviewing.

I actually do want to go into primary care or emergency medicine. I am really hoping that admissions committees believe me based on my previous community service work and other activities. I am well aware that there are probably other applicants who dishonestly say that they want to go into primary care to match the mission statement of a particular school. 🙁

Since I'm planning to do an MD/PhD in neuroscience, I'm pretty sure I'll end up specializing in neurology or psychiatry. Right now I'm leaning towards psychiatry. I've also considered neurosurgery, but I feel like the length of that residency combined with the length of the MD/PhD makes that career a no-go as I would like to start my career before I'm 40.

As for specialties I could never do, primary care is definitely at the top. Also can't see myself doing urology or ob/gyn.

Me too 🙁 Now I am worried they'll think I'm BSing...O well

Neuro, neurosurg, or psych. Maybe double board in neuro/psych. 🙄

Definitely something where I can continue to do clinical neuroethics trials.

psych all the way!!!

But I can see myself in peds, neuro or as an obgyn too

If I had to name a top 5...
1.Family Medicine
2.Neurology
3. Psychiatry
4. occupational preventative medicine
5. pain medicine

I went into this process (forever ago) knowing it'd be emergency medicine. Working in an ED (also forever) reinforced this desire. A small percentage of me loves ENT though.

i liked my doc as a child, drowned him in questions though...why this? why that? lol could still remember his nervous smile

Got to get in medical school first, but after that I would have 1.Emergency 2.Family 3.Radiology 4. Psychiatry

A few that I'm really interested in are internal medicine, emergency medicine, oncology, and pediatrics, or some variation of the above.

But really, I just wanna be able to pass med school right now and I'll be happy lol.

Of course medical school is first, but here are my specialties for right now. lol

Pediatric subspecialty (oncology, and surgery)

Radiation Oncology. (all ages)

Orthopedic Surgery (sports medicine).

Neurosurgery.

Cardiothoracic Surgery. (maybe pediatric cardio surgery)

Anesthesiology

🙂
