When I sarted med school, I didn't really know what specialty I wanted, but felt drawn towards oncology, or even pediatric oncology. At the time, I didn't know what I found so attractive about them, and thought it was a little morbid. When I actually did some oncology and then did psych, I realized I was drawn to the psych aspect of oncology, how people act when they are under stress and greif. So I figured psych was the way to go since then I didn't have to deal with all the chemotherapy and fiddling with the medicine side of things when what I really wanted to do was explore their emotional reactions to what they were going through. That sounds a little cold, like I'm examining them through a microscope, but what I really like to do is help them find some peace about their situation. Like a pastor or counselor or something. Who can also sedate them when necessary. 😉
