I would agree with radiology. One of our anatomy lecturers has an abnormal retroperitoneal organ. And I think the urologist had no idea what the issue but the radiologist knew it instantly.

Surgeons know a lot about their area of expertise as well. I would agree radiologists are by far #1.

overall = radiology
About any one particular area = the surgical specialty that deals with that area

Static and cross-sectional anatomy? Radiology

Functional musculoskeletal anatomy? PM&R and Orthopedics

In-situ living anatomy? Surgery

Microscopic anatomy? Pathology

Oh rlly....you think a PM&R will know more than a musculoskeletal fellowship trained radiologist....not a chance.

Apart from the "microscopic anatomy" a practicing radiologist is going to be able to name the most anatomy hands down. Alot of surgeons who have been out of residency for awhile forget the names of everything they don't directly operate on or is functionally significant.

Radiologist for gross for sure.

Medical Examiners that did a residency in pathology, maybe? They'll have both a good portion of gross under their belt (at least the stuff they open up) in addition to the microscopic stuff.

Theres more to the question than simply "who knows anatomy?"

If Im looking at a CT scan trying to make a clinical decision, I greatly appreciate the Radiologists input.

If Im looking in an abdomen and trying to identify an aberrant artery or nerve, a Radiologist is not going to be of much use. I am going to call another surgeon to look along with me.

Saying that a Radiologist can identify more structures on cross-sectional imaging than most other physicians goes without saying...I sure HOPE they would be able to do so.

True but there is alot more than cross section images if you consider all imaging types. Furthermore, volume wise it isnt even close, remember the radiologist is seeing many more patients, I am guessing they would be far greater experts in unusual anatomy than most any other physician....most radiologist read more studies in a single year than surgeons will operate on in their entire career.
