Hey everyone

I am posting this because I am uneducated about the facts about taking a pre-req. I took ochem1 last year and didn't do well in the class, so I have to retake it. I originally told myself that I was going to wait to take it till I decide I want to transfer to a university (UW-madison I hope to get into) for fall 2010.

Ever since I joined SDN, I have seen so many things about communtity colleges to take and not take them there.

The pros for me to retake ochem1 at a cc:
1) I would be in school less years (will not be taking my physics1&2 at same time)

2)cheaper

3) I have taken it before with this teacher and know alot of his style

4)My good friend is taking it

5)will get rid of the bad grade which could prohibit me from getting into UW-mad

The cons:

1) The teacher is rid hard and never gives you a break with anything (phD guy here for 20 years)

2) will be spending a lot of time studying to make ochem my life to get a good grade while I want to still commit to my vol activities and won't be able to work as much too

3) I can't take ochem2 at a this CC b/c I have plans the next following semester. This is the biggest problem I am asking about if its ok to take one class at a different school and take the 2nd half later. Will admissions not like this? Does this not make sense b/c what he would tech for ochem2 go on to what he taught us in ochem1 and I coiuld be screwed educationally if I miss out on information I need to know for other teachers for ochem2 esp at a university???

4) before anything I have to make sure it transfers to UW-mad or 3 others I applying b/c I will not be taking it AGAIN for the 3rd time!!!!!!!! I just found out last month my school got a guarantee transfer program to Cornell science majors which makes me think if our science program is this strong it would prob transfer, but I will find out for sure anyway. I wish they had this when I started at my cc, oh well...

I could take this class and it could be harder then a 4-year and I could just have the 4 year ochem grades instead of a CC. I just don't know what I should do at this point really...Should I call some school admissions to ask about the ochem taking at 2 universities? Any suggestions would be real great. Thanks!

I took Organic Chemistry I in 2004. I got discouraged, thinking that since I got a "C+" that it ended my dreams of vet school. My advisor wasn't helpful nor knowledgeable about vet school and I changed majors. 5 years later, I am enrolled in Organic II at a different, larger school with a different prof., textbook, everything. I have been studying every day, basically 24/7 to jog my memory and to cover all the information that I had previously learned. I think that yes, I may be at more of a disadvantage taking the class at another university 5 years later, but you do what you have to do. I want to be a vet, and I'm going to do all that I can to kick O Chems butt!! I think that you should go with whatever time line that you have planned. You'll get there! I wanted to add--- make sure if you don't take OChem I and II back to back, that you take II ASAP! No sense having to re-learn the info like I am!

I would check with the school that you're considering transferring to. Some schools require that you complete series courses with them, because what they cover in the first half of their course may be taught in the second of half of the course that you took, or vice versa. They may want to compare syllabi, or they may already have an answer for you, but at least way you know for sure.

That is a major disadvantage for you because ochem changes a lot. At least if your doing well, that is fantastic!! 🙂 So, yeah, I would take ochem right away my first sem at my new college to finish it out which makes more sense. Thanks

I heard this before and you are prob right. I forgot schools could be like that. I am going to check out with UW-madison this summer and I will bring my transcript and syllabus with me to show them.
