Just curious about what people have done in the past during their gap years to help them improve on their application for the current/following cycles.

If you are taking a gap year specifically to increase your potential on your medical school application, then I would volunteer, work in a clinical setting, or study for the MCAT and score higher. However, if your application is good enough, then just have fun and make sure you have something interesting to tell the ADCOM committee -- the committee likes it when students take a gap year. Gap years help students regain focus and start with a fresh motivational drive.
