Hi all,

The way things are lined up I'll have all my scores and already be graduated in November. I figure I can do one of two things:

1. Try to find an open position in the residency I want (FM) and see if I can start ASAP.

2. Participate in the match and start residency in July (7 months later.)

I have a program that I really liked, and they like me, but it sucks to sit around for 7 months and forget everything.

Question: How hard is it to start a program off cycle? Would it be possible to start a program off cycle and then switch over to the program I really want to be in on July 1?

Question: Are there "intern" positions available where they just hire you and you do basic medical doctor stuff but aren't technically attached to a program? It'd be really great to get most of my "stupids" out of the way before starting residency.

Thank you

There aren't really any "intern" jobs where you "do basic medical stuff but aren't attached to a program" until you have a license (which you won't have until you finish an intern year at least). And it isn't going to be possible to start in one program off cycle and then switch in July. Nobody is going to put in the effort to train someone who isn't going to at least put in the full year. You are going to be expected to sign a one year contract no matter when you start. Spend the time to get Step 3 out of the way and maybe do some research/earn some money. You aren't going to have the time once intern year starts.
