What to do for year off?

I'm a current surgical prelim, and I just matched into rads for 2015. I'm trying to figure out what to do for the next year. I'd like to do research, however it seems like finding a paid job may be difficult. I'm sure there have been a few people in the past that have switched paths and ran into the same issue. Any advice on how to find something to do?
