So I'm in a bit of an awkward spot, and could appreciate some advice. My acceptance letter to the Ph.D. program I'd like to attend has gone missing. I brought it into my office, hoping to leave it there for safekeeping, but then I had to move offices and I think the letter got lost in the jumble. I am frantically searching for it, but don't want to run into the possibility of not having anything to send in before the April 15th deadline.

How badly does it reflect upon me if I email the Admissions office to ask them what to do? This school is my top choice, and I do not want to start off on completely the wrong foot.

Life happens. Just explain the situation and I am sure there will be no problem. If anything it could end-up being a funny anecdote for your to share with your POI. You are obviously organized enough to have gotten accepted to the program; they obviously think you are a qualified and bright individual. This isn't going to radically alter their perception of you.

Life happens and the best thing you can do here is confront the issue ASAP. No need to let the anxiety fester.

You'll probably be speaking with administrative staff about this, not faculty, right? If they're cranky about it, don't let it bother you--some admin staff are cranky all the time. Make a point of being courteous and friendly to them once you're in the program (some of them aren't treated too well) and you'll be fine.

I think maybe you tell them you can't find the letter and need to decline the offer. 😱

Sorry, just being sarcastic. I wouldn't get all wound up about it, say it was misplaced and that you would like to accept the offer. They already made the offer and life happens... what would you tell a patient who came to you with the same dilemma?

This is why you do what I did; frame it and hang it up aside my B.S. Diploma to cherish the accomplishment as long as possible 😉

Really though, don't fret too much about it. Simply e-mail them explaining the situation, or if you're really embarrassed, you could say that you would like a digital copy for your records.
