I didn't match and the scramble was a no-go. Now I have a year to do *something* while re-applying. I'd like to keep my foot in medicine if for no other reason than I'd miss it like heck. But I think it's also good for re-application. The question is: how? I'm not qualified to do anything medical with a medical school degree, am I? Not sure what to do.???

research might be the way to go..looks good and makes some money, unless it is volunteer..do research in the field of interest. it might get you somewhere and a few papers too.

Sorry to hear that things have not worked out so far. There is still a chance that an open spot will pop up before it's time to start, so don't give up yet. Make sure that the people in your specialty at your med school and at any residencies where you felt you hit it off with any of the interviewers know that you are still looking for a spot just in case someone hears about an opening.
I do think that the conventional wisdom is that either an internship or research is the best way to fill a gap year. If those simply aren't an option, I do know of someone who spent a gap year doing volunteer work in a free clinic. Maybe you can ask at your school if they have any openings for you to TA an anatomy or OMM lab?
Good luck.

You enjoy kicking people when they're already down, don't you? The OP is in a difficult situation and is asking a very serious question, yet this seems to you like the perfect time to make a dumb joke and make light of the situation. Shame on you.

What you do during the depends on what your interests are...
If you are into research you can find a job paid or unpaid....lots of PIs are always looking for free labor

If you are into primary care you can volunteer at a free clinic (as someone mentioned earlier) or you can work in one of the FQHCs that is if you live in an area that has them

Or if you are into surgery you can work as a TA in an anatomy lab or a research project

If you are interested in global health you can do some international rotations, missions trips etc

hope this helps....

agree. There are real good med students and med grads who sit out for yrs, that don't match. they're good ppl, real humans. is the facebook group even real?

What's one to do with a degree then? A deg that won't allow one to practice medicine, because no residency means no license

You mean "international" clinical rotations (aka clerkships)? After one finished the core rotations at any med schools (IM, Surg, OBGYN, Ped, Psych?), can one continue to apply to hospitals to do more rotations? Do they need to just apply to teaching hospitals worldwide? free? or need to pay some sort of tuition??

I ... .I'm about to enter an MBBS prog in China, but I don't know about how to apply for those US elective rotations that I will need. Med schools in China have only 52 weeks of rotations, then they give you med degree. What if I'm short of 72-52=20 weeks to go back to US?
