Hey everybody, I was going to post this on the pre-allopathic but I figured you guys/gals have already been here so I'd ask you. So I'm a senior undergrad, just finished about all of my secondaries and am waiting now. Waiting to hear back from med schools and waiting for my senior year to start so I can enjoy the hell out of that. But also I was thinkin about what do people do the summer before med school? The correct answer is prob "do anything and everything you can to have fun", but I'm also thinkin I'll prob need to get a job..yeah I know that sucks...but seriously I need some real money (not loans) goin into med school.

So just post what you've done summer after you graduated undergrad.

Peace!!

I moved to the city where my med school is, then I did absolutely nothing related to school. I went trout fishing, which I would highly recommend.
The point is to enjoy the time you have before you have no time to enjoy. Good luck getting in!

yo, if you really need to work...learn to bartend before now and then if you havent already. Its a fun job, can be done part time, and pays really well (mostly in cash) 👍

or you could teach for one the test prep companies maybe...

I continued working until the week before orientation, and am now taking my vacation time (lying on my roof drinking mojitos, getting a tan, and sleeping as much as humanly possible).

Don't get a job. Enjoy one of the last summers of your life. Sure you could make a little money, but it isn't worth it. Spending your summer working to make a couple thousand bucks is pretty meaningless if you are racking up $80k to $120k in student loans.

hmm okay. Well I guess if I was to have fun during the summer, that would probably require money. Sooo, I suppose I'll continue my work study/library job this senior year and try not to spend all of it and save some for the summer. Sounds like a plan!

Thanks for the replys so far.

Anybody travel during that summer? Seems like a perfect time to do it.

Just relax and enjoy no worries. It may be the last time you have no stressers hanging over your head. There are a thousand and one hoops lying ahead of you.

I'd agree with those who told you to have fun. There's nothing wrong with making some money but can you realistically make enough that it will make the slightest difference in your medical school bills/loan amounts, etc?

A job which you enjoy which allows you to pay for your current expenses and have a little left over would be the best, IMHO.

Get out while you still can! But, seriously, do not do anything at all productive. 👍

Don't you need to go to bartending school and get certified or something first? 😎

yeah I was actually lookin at that. Not sure how much the school costs, but there are "Professional Bartending Schools of.." for a bunch of cities. Its 40 hours of "training" split in day or night classes spread along 2 or 5 weeks. They say that the average part-time bartender working 15-20hrs/wk makes anywhere from $200-$400/wk. And the avg "full-time" worker working 30-40hrs/wk makes about $500-$900/wk.

So depending on how much the school costs. It would seem like a cool thing to do to work 15/16 hrs/wk and bank like $200 a week for 3 nights of work. Not bad, and you'd still have most of the week to do whatever you want with your new-earned beverage dealin' $$$.

get a job, make some money. or relax and travel. or just hang out with friends all summer. whatever you do, don't study. its a complete waste of time.

I think that depends on the city. I never did one of those programs...I started off waiting tables and barbacking and learned how to bartend by reading the recipe book (its not rocket science, hehe) and usually made 150 bucks a night at worst...it was a lot of fun too...

Forget about all this bogus advice, now is the time to start studying for step 1's!

Just kidding, but seriously though, there are a lot of people who spend that summer studying. I screwed around my whole summer, and when I started anatomy (coming from an engineering major in college where memorization was looked down upon) it definitely was a culture shock. It turned out my med school had offered this summer program that incoming first years actually got paid to attend. They taught them anatomy and biochem (very similar lessons to those during the school year). Guess which students got honors during anatomy and biochem? So, if you think you want to get AOA, it wouldn't hurt to do some pre-reading. But if you're just a normal student then enjoy your summer!

I bought a surf board at the begining of the summer. Now my buddies and I go to the OC beaches every other day (taking the day in between to rest). Let me tell you this...there is nothing better than spending the afternoon under the beautiful California sun, with great Newport Beach waves then topping it off with In&Out Burgers and Krispy Kremes! 👍

Wow that sounds amazing! I'm jealous, I'll prob be stuck in Nashville..we'll see though. Will man, I'm glad you could experience total relaxation at its finest! thats my goal 😉
