howdie folks

just wondering: i did an elective in a specific field which i really enjoyed and showed interest in, etc, but in the end decided against going into that field for various reasons. Question is: do i have to let them know about this? like is there an etiquette issue? i mean, i know they won't miss me that much🙂, but would it be weird if i never showed up to ask for LOR or whatever ?

thanks

I'm sure it would be appreciated if you thanked them for the opportunity and explained your decision not to pursue that field. However, unless they went out of their way to accomadate you during the rotation, it's probably not necessary. I guess it all depends on your relationship with them during the rotation.

I don't think it would be a big issue if you let them in on the fact that you won't be taking up that particular field in the future. What matters is that you showed interest 'during' the electives. I would suggest staying in touch with those people if they can (it's important to make 'contacts'.. especially ones who've liked you while you've rotated with them) and DO get your recommendation letter... it's an asset that might come in handy anytime. Besides, I did electives in a field I wasnt' going to take up later and everybody was cool about it... most of these people are professionals and they understand.
Goodluck!
P.S: Communication skills are imp though.. make sure you tell them how much you loved doing the rotation with them..
