Hi all,

What should I expect during second look and how should I best prepare for the serious part of it?

For the school I'm looking at, we meet with at least three faculty members. Is this generally the same everywhere?

In these meetings, how much is talking about my personal research experience? And am I suppose to choose my summer rotation lab from these PI's? They wouldn't talk to me if they aren't looking for additional lab members, right? Are these meetings usually casual or more like cross-examination? 😵

I'd really like to go in prepared. Any input from those that have been through the process would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

This just my opinion but...

Second is the chance for you to figure out if you want to go there. When you're meeting potential PI's, I'd ask the the same questions you'd ask as if you were starting in their lab tomorrow. How's the research? How's the funding? How's the ancillary support (techs, core labs, facilities, etc etc)? Are they going to retire or relocate anytime soon? How's their trainee graduation rate? etc etc etc

Yeah, read up on their research so you have some idea of what they're doing, but find out what you'd be doing if you joined their lab. Most good programs wouldn't set you up with someone that wasn't able to take to you.

Again, just my 2 cents... 🙂
