Hey
i'm wondering what you guys got for those people who wrote you a recommendation? all i have done so far is write thank you cards (havnt mailed them out yet) is that enough? One professor who wrote me a recc, i will have again this semester, the other2 wont be my profs this upcoming term.
is it standard to only write a card or should i do something more? *if so, what....?

I am personally not going to write any thank you cards until I get an acceptance. Their letter has to officially benefit me somehow lol!

lol i was thinking of that too, like......why should i get anything more then a card as of now when i didnt even get an acceptance, & dont even know if i will?!

im so confused what the proper protocol is for this.

the only awkward thing is that i will have one of these profs again starting like....nextweek....so i dont know what to do! AH

i got my LOR writers chocolate and thank you notes. it wasn't expensive at all but i think regardless of whether or not you get an acceptance it's a nice gesture for someone who gave you a bit of their time, when, at the end of the day, they don't have anything at all to gain from it (now or later!) i think it's a little self-serving to save their gifts for when you get an acceptance :/

yea youre right. i just dont know what to get them, i feel like getting chocolate for an older male professor is weird, but that is a good idea for a female.
whys this so hard!
Also did you go their office and personally give it to them?

haha i understand your concerns. i got chocolate for both my male and female LOR writers....just a giant hersheys bar so not like a valentine's day-looking box which would for sure be awkward lol....i mean who doesn't love chocolate, right?! even if they don't like it, the thought matters more than the gift...i delivered it personally to the ones in town. If they were out of town i left it in their faculty mailboxes and followed up with an e-mail telling them it was there and reiterating my gratitude for their time. the only way you should feel awkward is if you don't get them anything at all and then see them again and feel like and a**hole! haha 😛

i think ill just send a personalized thank you card :-(
& if i get in, then maybe ill get them something then too, to celebrate. ha

One prof I know extremely well and I'm doing work in his lab this fall so I have plenty of opportunities to show him my gratitude since we're pretty much friends. Two other profs I don't have easy access to so I figure if I get an interview I will send them a thank-you card. For the dentist I shadowed I brought him and his staff some nice wine (actually cost me quite a bit 😱 ) to drink while they operate on patients. 😛
