Hey everyone,

I am taking my DAT by late Dec. So far, I have covered Chads for GC and OC and for bio, I studied off of MCAT Prinston review since my Bio foundation is horrible. I am planning on studying AP Cliffs and I have heard about Feralis notes. What should I do now? Should I just start studying or maybe start doing some multiple choice questions from Destroyer?

I don't know if I can finish all the material by that time. I also feel like I have forgotten my Chem review since I have been studying only bio for 2-3 weeks. Please help me out! I'm lost :-(

I am in your exact same boat! I take it on Dec 19th. Currently what I'm doing is cliffs AP, Ferallis notes, and Destroyer. Ive read on here that if you understand those 3 its pretty easy to get 20+. I suggest to bite the bullet and to read and understand the concepts well from cliffs then you can move onto Destroyer, the questions you don't understand in destroyer you can look up in cliffs or ferallis. Ferallis notes is pretty much Cliffs in a condensed version, I tried starting right off in destroyer but couldn't understand any questions and I didn't retain the knowledge as well because there was no base knowledge to add onto. Once I understood the concepts better I would still get some wrong but I was able to enhance my understanding of that subject instead of just knowing a random fact about the nervous system. Good luck! just 8 more weeks for us!

First off, good luck to you guys both. I personally knew the AP Cliff's book inside and out. Unfortunately for me, there were a few topics that were not covered in the book. Once you have the Cliff's book down, DAT destroyer is definitely a great supplement. Make sure to read through the answers choices. It's definitely worth doing the OC and GC problem sets multiple times. However, for BIO I suggest going through it once and studying primarily off the answer key explanations. It definitely has WAY MORE information than is required.

I'm not very strong at Biology myself, so I spent nearly a third of my studying to Bio. I didn't score incredibly high but I scored higher than I thought I would've (I would've been content with a 19 in Bio!). I used the AP book extensively and read that about 3 or 4 times. I used KBB for some sections and I bought Barrons like two weeks before my exam and read that over once. I also did destroyer and BC. My best recommendation is to know either Cliffs or Barrons inside and out and with that you could at least pick up a 19. I haven't taken many upper level Biology courses (only cell and evo) so I studied like a mad man for bio, if you've taken classes like physio or something of the like, you probably be more prepared than I was.

I just saw your breakdown! awesome scores . Thank you 🙂
I am also taking the DAT in the Mid of Dec, I have not picked up specific day for it.
I just went over the chad videos for orgo and gen. for biology im slowly going over the cliff notes.
i haven't started studying the other sections yet.
Do you think 8 week will be enough time to take the test?
I would love to know how is your study schedule is like? how many hours a day you do you study?
By the way best of luck to you, you can do it.

I reviewed for a bit and then realized I wasn't getting much out of it. I started doing destroyer and looking up topics I was frequently getting wrong that I knew were important (phylogeny, body systems, etc) and supplementing with youtube videos. I used qvault for bio and a lot of their questions were very similar to my DAT. I saved bootcamp for the two weeks before my DAT to do simulated timed practice tests. Use destroyer (2x at least), qvault and bootcamp and supplement with textbooks and youtube videos for important things you don't understand and you'll be set. I got a 28 on bio.

I am not sure if any of the above posters mentioned this, but you gotta try to to touch each section each day. Don't forget about the QR section. Did you watch Chads QR videos yet? Watch his QR videos if you have not done so already, then do Math Destroyer at least twice (tests 1-10 is adequate). The Math Destroyer is really really really a huge plus and I can't say how much. It prepped me so well for the real thing. I was able to tackle all sorts of questions.

In terms of reviewing, you have to try to cover all your notes for one section in one day. Then, the next day you have to move on to the next section and review it. For example, Monday-review all your Biology notes (look through them, review them, brush up on stuff you are weak in, etc). You have to do it all in one day. Then Tuesday-review all your GC notes (look through them, review them, brush up on weak stuff, re-watch videos that you need better explanation on, re-take quizzes if necessary, etc). Then Wednesday-do the same as above for OC, Thursday-do that for QR, etc. Try to read an article from scientific american or americanscientist.org everyday. Here is a link from Bootcamp's page on the bottom left that you should try to read every day. This will prepare you for the RC section since there isn't anything directly that can be done. Do a little PAT as well.

You mentioned that you have forgotten all your Chemistry material and that is understandable. Since you have been only studying biology for the past 2-3 weeks its going to happen. However, you gotta review stuff like I mentioned above. Do a certain subject and just focus on that for the whole day. Go over your notes, review them, re-watch videos and do quizzes again if you need to reinforce old concepts, etc.

You have to do DAT Destroyer for Biology, Gchem, and Ochem at least twice. First time might be hard, but second time it will definitely reinforce a lot of concepts. If you need to re-watch Chad's quizzes then definitely do that too.

For Biology, some people have said that Feralis and Cliffs can be hard or too dry because its just like reading a book. Everyone has their own way of studying, some are visual learners, some are able to comprehend things well from the books, some are audio learners, some are naturally smart, etc. If you are someone that is a visual learner, then definitely YouTube some stuff for a better understanding. Cliffs misses out on some physio stuff and that can do damage to your bio score, so use Google if you think its too dry reading a book the whole day. Here are some links that may help you as they really helped me in stuff I was very weak in. I think there were a couple questions that would've done damage to my bio score if I didn't know this stuff because the bio section is so random. Definitely try to just YouTube search this stuff or Google search this stuff for some videos (preferably YouTube). You will understand things better like this and try to take notes on how things work. Here are some links:

So your other question is what you should do now....well here's what I can suggest. Spend 4-5 days reviewing all your notes after you got everything down (do 1 subject each day). Like I mentioned above Monday-bio, Tuesday-chem, Wednesday-orgo, thursday-Math, Friday-re-do biology, Saturday-Gchem, Sunday-light review or chill. Then, if you have not started DAT Destroyer you have to do that. You gotta go through that at least twice because it will help you a lot. I can't tell you how random the bio section on the real DAT is and the destroyer is a great way to expose yourself to that. Organize/make or print a sheet/packet where you can write your answers for all your questions that you take on DAT Destroyer. Here's how I did it:

upload_2014-10-30_22-39-41.png

Do 40 Biology, 30 Gen Chem, 30 Ochem each day. First time you go through it, do it untimed. Mark any questions you got wrong with a slash (like you see above). By the way if you want this document, let me know and I'll send it to you. If you think there were some questions that you feel seem important or something you don't understand or that doesn't make sense or something you feel you should review more on for that subject or something you need to learn, then star it (like I did above in the second column). The first column is to write your answer and the second column is to put a star or mark it because you want to learn more about it or in case you skip it to come back to later. In the beginning, it was easy for me because I was fresh off reviewing my notes but towards the end of my biology destroyer questions, I was getting like 15-20 wrong. DAT Destroyer is meant to destroyer you, but its also meant to prep you well for the real thing, which is why its important to go through that thing twice. If you think your biology is weak then do Destroyer biology twice. Some do it only once because they have a solid bio foundation and they seem to know their bio stuff. Now, once you finish each section, you gotta go through all the questions/answers (regardless of if you got it right or wrong). Use your notes (everything you have and everything you used) to see how to get the right answer. If you have the question right then that's good because you know that stuff but try to answer it again while going through the questions and the solutions. For the questions you get wrong, flip back to whatever page your notes on that subject may be on and try to find the answer through there. This is how you will remember something because you are actively learning something and you are trying to learn more about it. If you still feel confused on stuff, then do what I suggested above. Google it, YouTube it, or try to research more on that certain thing. For example (I am making this question up), if one of the Destroyer bio question asks "Which of these is involved in cell-mediated immunity? a) B-cell, b) Cytotoxic T-cell, c) Red Blood cells d) Plasma cells e) Memory cells" and you chose the wrong answer, then YouTube or Google search cell-mediated immunity. There is a video above I posted on immune response that explains cell-mediated vs humoral immunity. It really helps answer this question. Take notes on the video(s) if you need to better understand a certain subject. Right down step by step if you need to because next time you are reviewing your notes you will be able to picture what exactly happened step by step in a certain thing. Do this stuff for Gchem and Ochem as well. Try to do it for Math Destroyer if you feel your Math is not so good. Remember: use your notes to find the answer for the wrong problems. If you can't find anything, then use the solutions at the back of Destroyer.

The second time you do DAT Destroyer time yourself. Give yourself 30 minutes Biology, 30 minutes Gchem, 30 minutes Ochem. Do them all together for 30 minutes each. Once you finish biology go straight to Gen chem and after those 30 minutes go straight to Ochem. THEN, once you are done grade your answers like you did the first time around and try to solve the answers. Use your notes to find the correct answer(s) to the wrong questions. Keep in mind this will take a long time to do (it took me 4-6 hours for Math Destroyer when I would do this), but if you are consistent then you will be able to finish it on time and in adequate time to do the other things that you have planned for the day.

Once you have gone through DAT destroyer twice, review your notes again. You might be approaching closer to your test date so you review your notes and then you jump to DAT Bootcamp. Take those bootcamp exams because those things are going to help big time. Be sure to review your notes everyday after Bootcamp each day. If you have some free days, review a certain subject that day. For example, say that you are kind of forgetting Ochem, then you can go through your organic chem notes for that day. You might know majority of that stuff, but you feel that you need to reinforce some of those weak spots so that's why you review it. Do bootcamp tests and right down important notes and try to solve for the right answer(s) again using your notes. Understand why something is right the way it is. Finally you test date may be coming closer so take those 2007 and 2009 tests as well. If you have some free time, then definitely re-review your notes. The day before your test, relax. Don't stress yourself by studying too much! Just do a light study and chill. You put in so many months of work so there is no doubt that you should do well!

Good luck!

I think 8 weeks is enough if you study 8-12 hours a day and start your bio ASAP. After finishing chads, I went over MCAT prinston for bio which is around 400 pages because my bio foundation was not really strong. Now I'm just doing all the GC destroyer in 3 days and all the OC destroyer in another 3 days just to get done with it for the first time, then Im doing 1 chapter of Cliffs , 1 math destroyer test , 40 GC or OC destroyer and 40 bio destroyer and 1 PAT BC every day . (This is my schedule for November) which covers math destroyer and DAT destroyer twice as well as Cliffs and BC PAT once.

Good luck!

Actually I just realized that I have to install Flash player to open them, so don't worry about the bio videos . I'll install the flash player to watch them. Thank you once again and God bless you!

OH MY GOD! I don't really know how to appreciate your help. I'll definitely use all of these helpful info for the rest of my schedule . I just want to see if you could please send me the multiple choice sheet you made for yourself ([email protected])
I am not sure if Ican open the first 4 videos you have uploaded for bio.
And my last question, I have 2010 destroyer and 2009 math destroyer. Should I get a 2014 version ?

Some people like to get the newest edition since it can help. However, many people have done extremely well using older editions. I believe quite a few people scored 22-25AA using the 2012 version. BUT I am sure these people have mastered the basics and just used destroyer to hammer it down.

Thank you very much, I just ordered the 14 version just to be safe 🙂

Destroyer 2009-2010 stuff is okay, but it might be a little dated due to new material coming out each year for DAT prep stuff. I see you mentioned above that you got the '14 version. That's good since it'll have all the latest stuff. Good Luck!

I keep on getting 18's on my Bootcamp PAT , for the first two tests . Hope I can get it up to 20+ by the end of the practice exams. I really think it all comes with practice

I saw matardug and mkhan both already posted, and I they are the people that I took all of my suggestions from for this section. I just retook my DAT and went from a 15 bio to an 18 bio. I wasn't even a bio major, so that will be a big advantage to you if you are a bio major.

Here are some quick tips I would give you:
- know all types of punnet squares (AABB, AABBCC, and blood types), I am positive you will get at least one on your test and it won't be hard so you gotta know how to do it or you're shooting yourself in the foot.
- know embryology (really just the time of sperm development all the way till embryo) WELL. I went to a small school and the only embryology I got was for one week during advanced human anatomy. I noticed that both my first DAT and the most recent one, these were concepts that came up in 3-5 questions. I think crash course biology has a video for this, I watched it and learned it inside and out and I am confident it covered all of the bases.
- know everything about skeletal muscle contraction.
- watch crash course biology video about phyla, that should be enough for the test. They will ask you something simple like "which of these is known for lateral symmetry" and you just gotta remember little keys like a starfish is an echinoderm and stuff like that.
- really hit "early earth" stuff. People blow over this because its like some sort of weird old school questions but I had at least one question on both of my DATs about it.

Other than that, you are going to get 3-5 really far out bio questions that rely on your ability to think. So its a lot about spreading yourself out. IMO you should solidify yourself in the chemistries. Take the bootcamp practice tests and the Qvault practice tests. If you are already scoring 19s and up then I would just maintain what you have been doing (unless you are truly shooting for a 25 bio) and I would sink time into GC and OC. It seems from my experience looking at breakdowns that people are more likely to get above a 22 in GC especially because its like simple math based stuff.

If it means anything, 2 days before my DAT retake, I scored:
Bootcamp: 16, 17, 14
Qvault: 17,17,16,15,17
2009 DAT: in between 17 and 18

Then on the real deal, I pulled an 18 which I am pretty stoked about since that wasn't my major. Best of luck!

Gosh, I am aiming for that high on Bio too I just don't know how to be efficient in my studying. I bought so many resources it's been taking me so long to go through everything. I can't buy QVAULT too b/c I'm already on overload with all these materials. How to do that well on Bio?

Do you recommend knowing Destroyer's Bio really well? I did them once but so many questions are super random and detailed.

Its about quality over quantity. Keep going through your resources at a good pace without trying to rush through everything. Write down the questions you get wrong. Understand why you got them wrong. If you get like 3 questions wrong on the same topic, take a few minutes and watch a video to understand it. You'll be fine! Don't stress, thats most important 🙂

Everyone raves about destroyer bio. I can honestly say I didn't think I saw many if any of those little detail questions from destroyer on my exam. Its great for knowing what to study, but those tiny details are not worth the time it takes to memorize them, in my opinion. Good luck!

How much did you score in qvault when you did it first time? Coz I am using the exact same study material you mentioned. And I did qvault tests and got 17-20. For bootcamp I scored 20-21. But still I don't feel confident in biology. And I am taking my DAT in two days.

Honestly I wouldnt worry. Spend your last two days reviewing things you are not confident with (and i don't mean everything.... lol) I don't remember my exact vault scores but I believe they ranged from 18-25. My bootcamp scores were 20-23.
