I'm going through interviews right now and hope to begin DO school in 2008. I've got a nice suit for my interviews and all, but I was wondering what is standard attire for class once one is actually in med school. I ride a motorcycle, so my standard fair is jeans with some pretty heavy duty boots and a shirt suitable for whatever the weather is doing at the time. This is sometimes coordinated with leathers if the weather is cold enough. Just wondering if professional attire is expected since this is considered professional school. Would I be out of place in my biker garb?

I wear jeans most of the time, but it depends on the school. Some do require daily professional dress.

well if the biker garb consists of buttless chapps then they would probably be out of place

Not at AZCOM! I'm pretty sure you can where whatever you want (sometimes I wonder...)

I'm in jeans,a hoodie, and danskos or chucks just about every day. I think I wore a dress once. I wore a skirt to our white coat ceremony. that said, I am under no illusions that I have any sense of style, or anyone should dress like me. but really, it's quite casual.

disclaimer: we're in california, and have no dress code. things are casual here. other schools will be different.

the admin has pretty much said that our student body here at nycom dress like slobs and i think they are discussing a dress code policy. but i think everyone should be allowed to go to school in sweats or scrubs. if i have to sit for 9 hours in a freezing lecture hall, there is NO WAY im putting a skirt on. i think its ridiculous to make adults dress a certain way for class. there are definitely times where business dress is appropriate, and lecture is NOT one of them.

That was the answer I was hoping for. Anyone from TCOM that can answer for them specifically since TCOM is my first choice?

p.s. Buttless chaps only happen on really cold days. The primary reason is that they are easier to remove than full leather pants😀 They are not, however, for walking around and going to class in once one has reached one's destination...unless one is studying to join a Village People tribute band🙄

I know KCUMB wants you to appear professional. Luckily, the higher ups consider scrubs professional. I plan on getting 5-6 shirts/ tie combos for special days/hospital & clinic visits, other than that Ill be in scrubs.

SOMA and LECOM Erie/Br are two schools that have very strict dress codes. Essentially business casual, specifically no blue jeans. At LECOM guys have to wear neck ties and a button down shirt. SOMA doesn't require ties and also allows school issued scrubs.

Wear something comfortable.....You will be sitting for a long time and be up on your feet for extended periods of time during labs...

I usually alternate between a red jockstrap and neon blue bikinis with color coordinated Chuck Taylors, my superman motif cape and WWI leather flying helmet with goggles (if we're going to lab)....Seriously - you can wear pretty much what you want to at TCOM as long as it's not indecent for going to class. First year that'll translate to scrubs as you're pretty much in gross anatomy the whole year. When you're not, it's shorts and Tshirts for OMM and otherwise whatever you feel comfortable in.2nd year - whatever, as long as it's decent. However, when you have patient contact or are doing medical community service or hospital rounds - shirt/tie/closed toed shoes/slacks/white coat/washed/combed/brushed.... You are representing the school and they don't want you looking like you just came out of an explosion in your laundry hamper....for medical community service, in some cases, you can get away with scrubs and white coat but the person running the show will tell you...TCOM's a great place with a good program. You'll be glad you came if it works out and you won't have any regrets.....
