Ok, i was just wondering... I have an interview at SUNY-Upstate (Syracuse) in the beginning of December and weather.com said the average usually is between 30-40 degrees. As one can tell, I'm from suny Southern California so we really never have to worry about that. Do you still wear a normal suit or do you wear one of those heavy suit jackets (that is almost like a coat)? Thanks.

I wasn't aware that SUNY opened a campus in southern California....hehehe

I'm a girl, but I am also from socal, but went to school on the east coast. 30-40 is not that bad, assuming there is no windchill. If there is, I'd suggest a wool coat and maybe a scarf. Especially if they expect you to walk around a lot to tour the campus. But I think maybe you could wear a sweater and undershirt under your suit coat, and a scarf, and be fine, IF no wind chill.

wear a normal suit, topcoat and scarf if necessary. problem solved.

New England is solidly in the 40s this week. I'd wear a suit (just normal though sometimes I'd lean towards pants for a female instead of the skirt). Then I wear a wool jacket with matching scarf and gloves. And yes, I'm still cold. But there is only so much you can do- and given that I can't wear two fleeces, ear muffs, a scarf, and giant down long jacket to an interview. just be prepared to be a little cold.

Agreed. I had an interview when it was 13 degrees and thats what I did. I also had gloves.

wear your suit and a nice formal coat. mine is a 3/4 length wool/cashmere jones new york coat thats around four hundred bucks but i got it at macy's herald square on sale for less than three hundred. they have awesome deals on coats right now. i usually wear a black cashmere scarf and angora gloves. i guess you can wear a hat too since you lose most of your heat through your head, but be wary of hat hair. i hope that helped ?

If you interview at Upstate in December and the temp is the 40's, people will probably be out sunbathing and swimming in their outdoor pools. I'm currently a 2nd year at Upstate, and last year, in December, the average temp was in the single digits. I would just bundle up, grin, and bear it. You should be fine with a long coat, hat, gloves, and a scarf. On another note, congrats on getting the interview and best of luck.

Thank you guys so much for all your responses. 🙂

So I am from southern Cali too. I had an interview at Rochester and it was like 45 degrees but there was some windchill. I was absolutely freezing! But I wore a wool coat as well. I have an interview at Boston in 2 weeks...I plan on adding gloves to my accesories. What can I say, us southern cali people are rather spoiled.

Wear a warm jacket. You can just take it off once you get to the admissions office and hang it up somewhere in there. Your interviewer will never see it.

i was just going to wear my regular suit everywhere unless it was below zero. this comes from the girl who wears flip-flops in the snow cause she's too lazy to put on real shoes, though, so i wouldn't trust my advice! plus, i'm from michigan, so apparently that means i'm used to crappy weather.

but if you're wearing a pant suit, wear thick stockings or tights. This alone will keep you MUCH warmer than just a jacket. As a girl who is particularly prone to the cold, I can guarantee this is your best defense against the cold. BTW, you can probably expect some snow too.

this kind of thing is obviously not going to be a problem if you have hundreds of dollars to spend on a cashemere overcoat. most people from the south or from sunny california would be silly to spend that much on an article of clothing that they would rarely wear.
