Is there an unwritten dress code for the first 2 years of med school? What do students usually wear to class? Jeans and shirt? Shorts? I'll be going to school in part of the country where it's hot almost all the time and I would like to be allowed to wear shorts as much as possible. Do students wear different clothes to lab? Should I stock up on scrubs? Thanks for any help!

Labs aside, my impression was that most med schools are like your undergrad - within some sliver of reason, wear whatever the hell you please.

I'm guessing you don't want to be that guy wearing scrubs to lecture all the time. But I'm only an MS0, so that's just my $.02.

Whatever the hell you want, just not open toed shoes to lab. Im surprised this question comes up so much here. What, do premeds thing med students wear suits to class?

Someone told me that some of the DO schools have dress codes - I think people have to wear their white coats to class, or something. This may be where it's coming from.

Almost all allo med schools will have some sort of dress code language in their student handbooks actually, but generally non-torn jeans, shorts, etc are acceptable for days where you don't have to go into the wards. You won't get sent home from lecture because of being inappropriately dressed unless you really push the envelope. You will likely have (weekly?) clinical stuff during the first two years where you have to be dressed appropriately though (business casual, white coat, maybe tie).

Yeah don't wear scrubs, leave that to the vet and nursing students.

unless you have a very specific dress code at your school, like specifically saying you HAVE to have scrubs or have to wear shirt and tie...

very much like undergrad, whatever you want. I usually wore jeans and a t-shirt or polo-shirt, possibly a stripped button down shirt, and usually always new balance sneakers. If I had something to go see a prof or someone, I wouldn't want to be in gym shorts and a sweaty t-shirt, but that's just me...

At my school, as long as you're not seeing patients that day, the dress code is pretty much that you have to be dressed.

If you're seeing patients, clothing is optional.

At Auburn we actually have to dress up (guys: slacks, dress shirt, tie) all 4 years, include the first 2.5 non-clinical years...

TOP: red spaghetti strapped tank top with green and orange hearts and unicorn design

BOTTOM: Torn tighty-whiteys with poop-stain in back and pee-stain in front.

Absolute necessities for all lectures.

Any guys in your classes wear earrings?

Yes. One guy has 2...1 in each ear. Another guy had a mohawk for a little bit(although Im sure he would never have had it if we had clinic stuff to do)

This is true- I know LECOM requires students to be professionally dressed- ties, slacks, etc. while in school.

man, OP you got lucky. i asked this a month ago and got backhanded and commanded to use the search function. i guess now that final's season is over everyone's a little more helpful and relaxed.

but of course, where are our manners...

get your lazy butt in gear and use the search function like any normal forum user... if you think you're going to survive medical school if you can't use the search function like all the rest of us, well you've got anouther thing coming...

disclaimer: please realize that the above is TOTALLY KIDDING AROUND!!! I think you're right about the end of finals thing though... 😀

Not those of us who are in the midst of studying for Step 1. If anyone fails to use the search function on an obvious question during one of my 12-14 hour study days, God help them.

If your school has a dress code, they will let you know. Our dental school has one, and they hate us because of it. You're going to class for two years, what you wore to class for college still works. Yes, if for some reason you have clinic experience, you dress different, slacks, tie and coat (for men). For women, please wear high heels, but that's just a fetish talking. You just wear business attire.

Dress code doesn't exist. Especially around exam times people just throw on whatever and come to class (at these times showers, brushing your hair etc.. are optional too, if u r wondering).

Nova SE also has a similar dress code (according my friend who just got accepted). White coat and tie/white coat and scrubs

People regularly show up to tests wearing their jammies.

Professionalism? huh? wha? 🙂
