So, yeah. What would happen if you are accepted to a school under the MD/PhD program, and after first or second year of medicine, decide you'd rather practice than research. Would the school grant you a leave of the PhD program while maintaining you in the MD, or would they kick you out of both completely? And has anyone actually tried this/done this?

thanks

yeah, am very curious about this too. Not that I have such an attitude alreay, but just like to know.

No school would kick you out. It's assumed that, if you make this decision, that it was unforseeable, so nothing is held against you. However, some schools make you sign a contract at the beginning of the program stating that you will repay the tuition/fees that were covered by the program.

In any program you will stay on as a MD student if you leave the MD/PhD program. MSTPs are forbidden from asking for money back by the NIGMS, so this is further incentive to go with a MSTP school. non-MSTPs though typically have you sign a contract that forces you to pay back med school if you leave.
