Hi All,

I am getting ready for the first year at NJMS this August. Would like to learn from you which habits worked and which didn't for you in your first year med school.

What would you do differently on hindsight? Would be helpful for all first years to know.

Thank you. 😀

be GOOD friends with upperclassmen.

Realize that this isn't undergrad. Hit the ground running full speed.

Looking back, I wouldn't have gone to lectures at all.

This, and I would've listened more to what older students told me. As long as you have a consensus of opinions and enough self awareness to know what works for you, you should basically take everything older students tell you as gospel and integrate it as appropriate.

I would chill the eff out. It's alot of hard work, sure, but you know that already. You will have time to watch movies and drink beer some but not as often as you'd like. You'll have time to hang out with friends and family but not as often as you'd like. I went into first year completely stressed out and feeling like every aspect of my extra curricular life I liked was dead forever. You can still be a person.

Oh, and try to make some connections with upper classmen. There's so much stuff that is worth its weight in gold that becomes useless after the test. They love to have people to pass it on to rather than just throw it away.

Don't go to class. For me.... be very skeptical of all advice (MS2 or anyone above).

Our program paired us with MS 2s, and they were incredibly helpful. The only two other bits of advice I have are that staying up-to-date on studying really pays off around exam time, and use review books that upper classmen suggest.
