I have spent a great deal of time thinking about this question. How do you resolve an issue as large as this? Do you report your friend to the professor, or do you have an educated discussion with him and let him know this better never happen again? I am on the fence. On one hand you would want to know that only a dentist who is really determined succeeds, and on the other you want to see your friend succeed. Hopefully, both at the same time. In this unfortunate event how do you respond?

like spike lee says, "be a man, do the right thing"

keep your mouth shut! if your friend gets by through cheating, let him do it! this world doesn't go by the textbook, it's not the process that matters, it's the results. Rather than being an annoying friend, just let him be, should he get caught, he can learn the lesson the proper way.

Unless you are 100% sure that your friend cheated, just ask them about it and tell them to be more careful. You don't want to tell the teacher without knowing what happened, that can make a real mess.

Report his *****! so he gets kicked out of school and you have one less competition for dental school! LOL jk. Sorry I despise cheaters. I've caught a few while I was teaching. It's really annoying b/c it's always a pre-dent or pre-med student. I don't think those types of students deserve to be dentists and doctors. Prosecute to the fullest extent!

i think OP is talking about possible interview question and not really asking you guys about what he should do in real situation.

if you're studying for midwestern interview (which is one of the questions they are asking this year), i think they put heavy emphasis on ethics, so something along with reporting the incident can show your ethic.
i think i would probably talk to my friend for him to talk to the prof, but if it's not my friend i woudl probably tell prof/TA about what i saw (and only what i saw because you can never be 100% sure of what the other person is doing).

lemme know how you would answer this questino

Are you guys really the type to actually rat someone out?

Talk to your friend first. Although cheating is bad, let your friend firgure it out him/herself instead of ruining your relationship.
