What would You do IF you have to put your plan of attending Medical School on hold for 7-8 years?
How would you use these years wisely?

Well I am already starting medical school about 9 years later than my peers.

What I did during that time was :

1) Get a masters degree
2) Get about 7 years of research experience
3) Taught a LOT
4) Started two companies (I started another in undergrad)
5) Did a huge amount of presentations
6) Did a little bit of traveling (not nearly as much as some people, but I collected 7 states I hadn't been to before)
7) Had a few paying jobs, most of which ended up being medically relevant
8) Sex change
9) Faced two fears
10) Raised a family

Wannabe,

Most of us have delayed our dreams by at least that many years...so like FA said - it's not a hypothetical.

Like family, I deferred, supported my wife through graduate school, had three kids, did lots of industry-based research in engineering.

Hopefully entering 7 years later than most :xf:

Things I did:

1) Lived in Europe for 2 years
2) Became fluent in a 2nd language
3) Learned to move on and not dwell on the past
4) Got married (yay!)
5) B.A. in German (highest honors)
6) Competed in world championship sporting events, selected for Pan Am team
7) Been teaching math and chemistry for going on 3 years.
8) Volunteered steadily with underprivileged/disabled youth

Well, considering I've already done that it's a moot point. In the time that's passed, I've done a lot of things, have helped a lot of people, have learned a lot, and am kind of glad I did all of this.

However, if I had to do the same NOW I'd drop that plan like a hot rock and make the most out of life.
