A fellow staff member just now came to me and asked me to cover her tommorrow because she is "feeling tired and plans on calling in sick."


WTF?! Hello, Im a tired too! I want to lay in bed and watch cartoons as well.

So I already accepted because although I dream of being a pirate I dont want to be an dingus to my fellow pathologists, but what should I have done?

Feeling tired is not the same thing as being sick. I dragged my sick AND tired ass to work today, worked shorthanded, and didn't bitch. How many hours does she have between the end of her shift today and the beginning of her shift tomorrow? Damn sure it's enough time for her to get some rest. What a ****ing wimp.

Just cover what of hers you have to and leave her a ****load for later. Serves her punk ass right for calling in sick on a high volume day and leaving everyone else to compensate.

What you should have done is to tell her you will cover what you can but you have been swamped lately and doubt you can do it all by your lomesome. That says 1) I'm not an ass 2) I'm busy too and 3) Don't expect it to look all pretty on monday.

Ah, the woes of the "new guy" pathologist. This is so very typical. There is always at least one person in the group that jumps right in to take advantage of the new kid. It really does put you in an awkward situation. Do you say yes and knowingly allow her to take advantage of you or do you act like an aggressive ass and refuse? Very tough. Most (including myself) would have done what you did. You really aren't in a position to negotiate or refuse. The challenge for you is to set limits from here on in. You have to figure out a way to strike a balance between being nice and accomadating vs being her bi-otch.
As a new attending, you must establish that you are an equal. Just don't come off as an a-hole while you do it.
btw, this is part of the reason why about 30-40% of new pathologists leave their first job after 3-5 yrs. That and the typically crappy pay so many accept in a first job.

Actually, the lack of lap dancing pathologists is reassuring to those who worry about the job market for pathologists -- it means the job the job market isn't that bad.

It could just as easily mean that the job market for lap dancers is extremely competitive there. 😉

Lap dancing is definitely one of the better career moves for struggling actresses in LA. Far better than the waitress type jobs because its fairly flexible, high pay (VERY high in some cases) and keep you determined to stay in good shape.

What did you end up doing? I always wonder about people who say they are planning on calling in sick. A good night's sleep is often enough to help. And if you are healthy enough to be at work today, what makes you think you will be worse tomorrow?

Well, sometimes people feel sicker at the end of the day and won't leave but would not want to face another workday in that shape. If I knew I wasn't coming back the next day, I'd say so as soon as I knew.

What is up with people thinking tiredness is sickness? I mean, if you stay up all night unexpectedly and you work someplace where being unalert could kill people, then by all means call and say you aren't up to coming in. But, to plan ahead and say that you're tired when you have plenty of time to sleep is just stupid and unprofessional. And you can tell her I said that too.
