Hey, I don't usually post here because I am premed, but I have a question for a prepharm friend of mine.

Here is her situation:

-GPA 3.09
-worked as Pharm Tech for 3 yrs with strong LOR from pharmacist
-not willing to take PCAT so only applying to places that don't require it

She has almost 100% guarantee of getting into Pacific because of some good circumstances, but wants to apply to some CA schools too because her bf might be going to law school there.

Is there anywhere she has a chance in CA?

She has a B.S. degree? EC activities?
It is good that she can get into Pacific, most of us here will feel lucky if we can get into any school.

She will have her B.S. degree but other than work she has NO EC's. She hasn't done any volunteering or any leadership type things since high school.

I'm quite sure Southern Cal and UCSF don't require the PCAT.

and how does one person have a 100% guarantee of getting into a school? special relationship to one of the adcom? doesn't that just throw off the whole application process for everybody else? 👎

Her boss used to sleep with one of the adcom people there and gets 1-2 people in per year. Last year she got a guy in whos gpa was under 3.0

I personally am not thrilled about it. I mean, I am working hard to be competitive for med school so the fact that she has slacked off through college (where she had a 90% ford scholarship that would have paid for any grad school if she had maintaned a 3.5) kills me!

The bottom line is that she is my friend and I still want her to succeed, so thats why I am here asking about her chances.

Your friend should use her boss's connections since it's a guaranteed in. Though I think it's entirely unfair to the rest of us, she has been given a great door. She could try to apply to CA schools, however, from how you made her sound with the slacking off, the applications might be too much work for her. However if she did want to apply with her GPA, she should start immediately to have a chance with schools with rolling admissions in CA.

If she does take her boss up on the offer or if she makes it in a pharmacy program, her working habits and attitude will need to change or she won't make it in the pharmacy program.

Wow. If anything I would encourage her to go for California and completely dismiss Pacific. You could have an easy conscience knowing that you aided her getting into school by honest means.

Does she really have a chance anywhere else though?

actually if you did a search, u'd find a lot of the same questions being answered. I think she has a good chance with her good LOR from a pharmacist, and her gpa isn't all that bad.

however, if she's
1) not willing to come on SDN herself and find her own answers
2) not even willing to take the pcat and study for it
3) only wants to go to school by connection
4) not willing to apply to any school that she's not 'guaranteed' in

then even if she gets into a pharm school by default, she'll have a hard time getting through pharm school and life in general. And if she is a good friend of yours, i'd talk some sense/work ethic into her.

you're just being too nice!!😛

I hope your friend doesn't become a pharmacist, or gain admission into pharm school because honestly I don't think she deserves it. She does no real work herself and depends on others to research schools and push her through the door. She is applying to schools partly in hope that she can be close to her bf, she refuses to try the pcat, and won't come ask for help on her own. Not to mention that she has a less than stellar GPA and no leadership activities.
So really all she has going for her is her tech experience, a LOR, and the fact that she knows someone who slept with someone else.
Meanwhile thousands of people in this country work hard in school, perform well on the PCAT, have experience AND EC's, and don't depend on a push from someone else to get them in the door.
I can't believe you even asked this question....

These quotes reflect my opinion of your friend too.

Her GPA is low as well as here ecs. She only has that letter that other students with higher GPA probably will have. Looking at the stats alone, she has a chance but it's a difficult road. Looking at the person, she is set to bomb any interviews and acceptances aside from having that contact unless she can change her attitude about life.

I totally understand what you all are saying. I've suggested to her that pharmacy school probably isn't a good idea if she isn't motivated enough to try harder...In all honesty I think she needs to take some time off and figure out her life, but since I've said all this and she still wants to go through with it I am just trying to support her.

Honestly, I think it would be best if something goes wrong with Pacific and she doesn't get in. I don't think she deserves it and I also don't really think she cares at all about becoming a pharmacist- she only wants to do it for the money. I don't think she would succeed in pharm school considering her lack of work ethic and as I said, I am a hardworking pre-med and if anyone got into med school like that it would piss me off big time!

That being said, thanks for you responses
