Members of the ABPN will visit our hospital next week. We are planning on doing an interview to be published, thought about asking you guys the questions you want to ask. Only serious, no jokes

I know every 10 years we have to take our boards, and every 2 years renew our medical licence. Where does CME and MOC fall into the picture?

I heard about the vignettes issue, but I didnt take the boards. Can you please explain? Also any other questions fellowships, training...etc

In that vein... When are they switching to competency based board certification?

(Vs. Residency of an arbrary length that probably varies ~1.5-2 fold in total number of hours worked between the most clinically heavy/light programs).

I can't think of anything beyond what people have posted. And I suspect giving them the finger and saying "Sunlioness sends her love" would not be appropriate.

But this is ridiculous. My contract requires I stay board certified. Everyone's contract here does. But for some folks that means nothing and for me it means an ongoing pain in the ass.

How do they justify grandfathering? Either recertification and MOC are necessary to stay competent or they're not. Should I be scared that my boss is a crappy psychiatrist because he only had to take his test once?

Don’t mind the tests every 10 years because they are ridiculously easy with high pass rates. As far as the other MOC stuff, everyone is very lost. I know there are administrative exceptions, but unless you have a regular practice some parts are not well spelled out in English. A lot of people are betting this will change again soon.

Yeah, I'm totally willing to take a test every couple of years and to do CME. It's the PIP thing that I'm not a fan of. Didn't anesthesia get rid of that, too?

BTW, the folks over in anesthesia are complaining their new reality where they will have to settle for making $350 to $450k/year. Meanwhile, we're all excited that some psychiatrists make more than $300k.

No more test. Just fee's, CME obligations and weekly 'test your knowledge' learning modules.

Honestly, I'd never keep up with that. I do better with one big thing every once in a while versus keeping up with little things all the time. Weekly tests would probably mean me doing several weeks of tests all in one day, which I'm assuming is OK?

Speaking of which I need to pay ABPN and certify that I'm doing MOC with them. Can someone break down the MOC requirements again for me in simple language? Argh ... Maybe we should ask ABPN that?

yeah, same. I'm not sure where I have 30 min/week to really dedicate to it all year every year.

When I get home from work I want leave work at the office and forget about it until I get home.

I'd read about what they have. I'd almost prefer the tests.

Me too. I'll take a test every ten years. It's the week to week BS that tends to fall by the wayside.

Seriously though . . . I'm afraid I won't recertify and will lose my job just because I missed some little thing I should have been doing all along while I was busy actually doing the job. I still don't have a good handle on what I'm supposed to be doing. It scares me. And I'm pretty smart.

I've not paid anything or done any MOC with ABPN. Not until they change. You could sign up with NBPAS instead because that is a board which had been created as an antithesis to ABMS.

Or take the 30 mins while you're eating a sandwich during your lunch?

My state license expires at the end of the year. If I'm active with board certification then I don't have to submit any information for CME, etc. Kinda pushes you to do ABPN.

State license doesn't ask up front if you've completed CME?

Haven't started the renewal process yet and actually probably don't need CME since I just completed fellowship in July, which should count. However, my understanding is that all I need to say is that I'm keeping up with ABPN, and that's it. Otherwise, I run the chance of getting audited and needing to get stuff completed by my fellowship program and whatnot, which seems like a bigger hassle.
