Hey folks, I'm a fourth year medical student who worked as a psychologist for a number of years before entering medical training. The program from which I earned my doctorate has asked me to do a series of presentations for their students who are interested in "health psych", or who want to work/collaborate in medical settings. I have a list of high-yield topics. But I am interested to know what sorts of things you might want if you could get inside information on day-to-day functioning in medicine.

Here's my list:
  • Clinical Psychology as a "specialty"
  • Primary vs tertiary care and the difference in roles for psychologists
  • Common frustrations arising from a psych.* consult
  • Clinical areas in which psychology could have a huge and immediate impact
  • Things you should know well because MD's don't....
  • General insight into the stereotyped personality divide b/n medicine and psychology
  • Tips to maximize your pharmacological understanding in nonRxP areas

I appreciate you input

i'm REALLY interested in all those topics. i want to do clinical health psych, but my main concern is that i won't be able to merge into the medical world. i can't wait to hear what you have to share.

I think your posts will both informative and interesting. I'm going to be taking a Health Psych class in school (final year) - I'm really excited...

I'd be most interested in these:

Stuff you should know because MDs do not...particularly as it applies to non-psychiatrists...I love the ER docs that call me for an assessment because the PT had a panic attack and they swear up and down the PT is psychotic.

Just a quick nugget before we start rounding:
-dementia vs delirium. I am stunned by how many docs (particularly in the ER) don't know the difference. I also see a lot of referrals from primary care docs for dementia in younger patients who are actually delirious.....read "intoxicated". This is partially an artifact of the size of the teaching hospital, but still.....!

And yes, the "this guy is psychotic" referral from the ER is frustrating. Yes he stuck a chicken bone in his anus. I agree that is not normal behavior. But he is not psychotic.

More later.
