my impression is that the 3rd years are the most cynical because they're overworked and are the lowest of the rank in the wards and get treated like crap plus they have to cover for the residents because of the 80 hr week.

maybe second would be second years because they have to study for boards.

and then first years because they have to study so much stupid crap.

and screw the fourth years because all of them seem relaxed and constantly brag about how they never go to school or work blah blah blah

I always hear that each year is better.........Maybe second year comes with vasoline.

maybe 2 years of basic science gets tiring and you feel like medicine is nothing but memorization of stupid facts and you lose sight of what it's like to actually be a doctor as opposed to be a medical student. that could be one of them.

i cant wait to be a 4th yr, my friend had vacation basically from jan till yesterday when she started residency. Ok she had a month to study for step 2 but still.

The most cynical med students are the 9th year MD/PhDs who still don't seem to have a graduation date set. 😱
Definitely masochistic... 😉 😀

But even more, if they are in their 9th year and have yet to go to "Defend" their thesis... 😱

I guess for me, the amount of free time and the ability to dictate my own schedule outweighed that.

4th year. Fourth years don't give a damn AND they let you know it. ("Man, I woke up at 10:30 AM and rolled in ...just because. And I'm leaving in one hour.") Third years are still so scared that they pretend they love everything. "You want me to do ANOTHER DRE?? Making it number 10 today???? Yes!!! And this time I'm allowed to wear a glove? You are too kind. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!" (Note: unlike fourth years, this is being said with no sarcasm.)

Of course, you haven't seen cynicism until you've been in a call room with three post-call interns. That's when it's game on.
