Whats a good gpa..

Look at the average GPA of those accepted to medical school in the Medical School Admissions Requirement book (MSAR) Aim for comprable GPA's

4.0 is great. 2.0 is not. 3.0 is okay. 3.5 is right where you should be.

Depends on your school, really. If you go to a top 25 or so school, a 3.5+ GPA is considered pretty good. After all, you're competing with some of the best. Now, if you're at Podunk U, the definition of a good GPA is probably a 3.9+, since classes are probably not as rigorous. Even with a bell curve distribution, you have to consider the quality of student your being curved against. Nobody would argue that competing on the bell curve at Harvard is tougher than at Podunk U.

4.0 is best!

2.0 is suicide!

Everything else is MULTI-MULTI-factorial.

I know for UofWash med school that they look not only at GPA but also at whether classes taken were honors or not. Generally, 3.8-4.0 is very good, 3.5-3.7 is good, but not stunning, less than 3.5 is not so hot for a cummulative, but can be acceptable for a few classes.

just my 2 cents

This is true - the UW does consider whether classes were honors or not. I don't know if this is true for every school, though.

Caveat: I'm an undergrad at UW. Maybe a medical school has to be familiar with the undergrad curriculum. Dunno.

In general, it seems people with 3.5-3.6 or so are considered in pretty decent shape, meaning the GPA will not hurt or hinder them too much if they are applying to the average ranked medical schools. If you want your GPA to set you apart or if you specifically are interested in one of the USNews top 20 or something, you should aim for a 3.7-3.8.

Of course, a good GPA doesn't substitute for a good MCAT, good EC's, volunteer experience, research experience, and true dedication that interviewers can sense in an interview.

Something that's worked for me is to simply try your best in classes without burning out. Don't aim to maintain a certain GPA because you don't know if next semester will be a difficult classload or not. Instead (and this is going to sound annoyingly idealistic), do your best!

3.5-3.6 should be fine. 3.7 and above would be even better.

a good gpa is any that gets you into a medical school.

can range from a 3.0 to a 4.0.

im at a 3.4 and ive been fortunate this cycle.

there are lots of others who have lower gpas and have gotten acceptances to great schools.

I've got a 4.18, but I'm sure that is going to go down after this semester. (Our A+ is 4.3, A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, ...).

Depends for Ontario schools good is 3.7, great is 3.85+

not good is anything below a 3.6

But for other provinces it may differ.......

i could be wrong on this but my guess is that since the AMCAS and every med school looks at our grades on a 4.0 scale, they will just convert all your A+'s to 4.0s....so you don't actually have a 4.18 right now according to med schools. you have more a really high 3.

Am I right guys/gals?
