I'm a caribbean student... but we take shelf exams so I will answer. Shelf exams are subject examinations given by the NBME. They are similar to step I except they are by subject. There is a comprehensive shelf exam that covers all subjects. These help you gauge how well you actually know the subject for your boards. They give you a score that tells you where you rank among all test takers in the U.S.
