There's so much hype going around biochem majors...at least from what I can infer. Why is this the "golden" major in the eyes of the adcom? I'm thinking of leaving my major now and joining the dark side...

Adcoms don't care. In fact they would be just as happy, if not happier with an applicant who was a non-sci major. People most frequently choose biochem because once you have taken all the prereqs plus biochem, you have taken much of that major's requirements already. So I wouldn't leave a major you like for biochem out of some misguided feeling that it will help you get into med school. It wont.

What hype? Adcoms don't care what your major is.

from all the adcom people i have talked to- they don't care what your major is...as long as you have taken the prereqs.

From what I heard, on average, biochem majors tend to do the best in med school.

But other than that, adcoms don't care and there is no such thing as the "golden major".

Biochem is awesome, but it is not your "golden ticket" to medical school.

I have heard that undergrad major does not correlate to med school success.

Biochem rocks...but too bad no one cares. It's like everything else...as long as you have the pre-reqs.

However, note that Biochem is probably not for the faint of heart. By far my intro biochem course has required the most mental capacity of any other course I've taken thus far.

I do biochem because it's fun, and alot of it does carry over into any medical field. I enjoy all the classes, probably the most fun classes my whole year...but I'm also double majoring in biochem/physics, if that tells you anything about my personality. Who ever said it wasn't for the faint of heart got it right, expect some hard work if you want a biochem major, and that's coming from someone who loves it.

👍 ...

The only advantage I can see about being specifically a biochemistry major is that you will have a breeze going through some biochemistry classes in medical school. And it can only help your MCAT preparation.
